Hi All,

I have a 1987 2.3L EFI 2wd Ranger with manual trans that will not run. It has low mileage and good compression.
It had been setting for years. I have already done a number of things to try and get it running.
Below is a list of things completed on the Ranger.

Removed and cleaned the Fuel Tank.
Replaced both Fuel Pumps. (Fuel Pressure at 40psi).
Replaced Fuel Injectors. (Checked with NOID Light).
Replaced Fuel Pressure Regulator.
Replaced Fuel Relay.
Replaced Computer.
Replaced Timing Belt.
Replaced Distributer Cap.
Replaced Plugs and Plug Wires.

The truck seems to still have a fuel problem. If I pump the throttle pedal vigorously, the engine will try to start for a second, but not completely catch. If I spray fuel into the intake it will start and run for two or three seconds then die. I have checked for fuel flow while cranking the engine over with the injectors removed and I get fuel spray from the injectors. The NOID light test works correctly. The engine timing is set correctly. When the engine does fire it runs smoothly at high RPM for 2 or 3 seconds then dies.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

While you may have fuel squirting, it may not be enough pressure after it starts. You should at least have 38 psi or greater(40 is good). And you can monitor the pressure when it runs for those few seconds also, it should stay at 40 or higher..

Thanks for your reply, but if you notice in my post I already tested and I have 40 psi. I have a fuel pressure tester.

There have been many reports of bad new injectors lately but if you can verify spray pattern they should at least work enough to run.

Pumping throttle should have no effect on EFI. That was for carbs with pumpers. You could effectively add fuel on them that way. AFAIK on the only thin the throttle would for EFI is add air (assuming it's choked like from a clogged filter that could help) or if at WOT engage the "Clear Flood Mode" which disables injectors. I suppose if the TPS voltage is wrong somehow it could think you're at WOT all the time, but that should've shown when you cranked engine with injectors removed. Unless you had the TPS unplugged when you did that test?

I'd try it. Easy check. unplug the TPS and try to start it. See what happens.

Thanks Luke, I had no idea that the TPS could cause that. I'll give it a try tomorrow and report back.

Pumping the throttle may be cutting the fuel on and off to the injectors. Below a certain rpm and the throttle position sensor wide open puts the computer in "clear flooded engine" mode.
