I have a 1987 Ford Ranger 4X4 2.9L with a Blown head gasket. In our Yard we have a 1991 Ford Aerostar with a 3.0L with 500 miles on the engine. The body of the Areostar is totaled. Is it possibile to take the 3.0L engine out of the Aerostar and put it in the Ranger. And if that is possible does anyone have any suggestions as to how to do it????

Thanks

you would need all the wiring, brackets, pulleys, computer, and tranny. why not just go with a 4.0 or 5.0?

I am going with the Aerostar Engine because its fully paid for and sitting in the yard.

The aerostar is an AWD automatich version and ranger would fo couse be 4X4 Manual. So is it possible to convert it?

i am not sure you might pm rulebreaker. he is doing a 4wd aerostar. i want to say you can use your case but don't quote me on that. i just put those other 2 swaps out there cause they are common. the 3.0 is something different so you should try it. keep notes on it in case of problems

I've never done the swap myself, but off the top of my head I can only think of one problem: the manual trans used behind the 2.9 is usually not the same one used behind the 3.0. The auto's were the same however. 87 2.9's usually had a mitsu tranny behind them while all the 3.0s had M5OD for manuals. The A4LD auto was used behind both. So if you wanted to do the swap I think you would need to convert your ranger to an auto using the one out of the aerostar, or pick up a M5OD from the junkyard.

seven second, youre pretty much right on. the bell housing bolt pattern will be different. even though both engines may have used an a4ld auto, the bell housing will be different. you can probably do the swap, but like said before, you will need wiring and trans and computer etc etc from the donor vehicle.
