my rear end went out in1987 ford ranger. the big gear is the one that is missing teeth. what do i need to do? i havent done much on gears , so any help would be appreciated. what is the best thing to do
Yep, easiest by far, just replace the axle whole. The cost of a new gear setup usually exceeds what a new (used) rearend from a wrecking yard costs.
You might at the same time consider getting an 8.8" axle to replace the 7.5 that broke (stronger gears). They were used in '90up 4.0L Rangers ('90-'92 is the same width as yours, '93up is 2" wider at the wheel flanges).
a 7.5 can be had from a yard all day long for under 100, just pop the cover on the rear and make sure all is well before u purchase, becuase most yards are no return type places when it comes to rears.....
