well i guess i should start at the very beginning.

My boy comes to me one day and says to me i think i am ready for a truck! keep in mind that the boy is 13, so i look at the boy and say how much money do you have? he says, in the typical teenager stare, I dont have any money. So you can guess where this is going, (thats right) no where fast. well being the resourceful U.S. Marine that i once was i get online and go straight to ebay parts cars. While in my search i come along this lowly 1986 ford ranger parts truck. starting bid you guessed it $1.00. truck was completely dissasembled. The hood, fenders, grill, in the bed, no interior, bed removed, no seats, i mean bare cab the only thing put together on this truck was the doors and windows were where they were supposed to be. I being the great dad think :icon_idea: this will be a great project for US to build together. Well, after i bid on this truck it gets down to the last day. i get up in the morning a wow someone has out bid me on my truck, my sons dream and aspirations of owning his own vehicle, my ideas of all the things i can pass down to my son, the good knowledge of welding and fabricating, doing things right the first time, so you dont have to do them again. classic father son time. i bid once again, it tells me; you have been outbid, so in one last attempt at desperation i make a final bid at the closing buzzer, i press the enter button and time stands still, my computer sits there processing and the little windows flag in the corner is just waving, modem lights flashing, heart pounding, anticipation growing, my proud son standing at my side hoping beyond hope, finally the return of WINNING BIDDER. oh happy day, the sense of joy at winning a battle on the internet over a faceless tyrant who was trying to stop the life long tradition of father and son bonding ( read try to kill each other with power tools) So like the beverly hillbillys, we loaded up the expedition and were off to pay the man his $31.00 and retrieve our new project.

Well the wife, the kids, the dog, and me were off. let me tell ya two days in the truck with kids wife and dog, aint no fun, much less the fact that when we get to the big city of seveirville,tn the motel we check into at 3:00am there is a pile of people in the bed of a truck trying to get the keys out because they were locked in it. (hint if they aint on the seat or in the ignition, they probably aint in it). so i did my civic duty and called to local pd well Barney Fife showed up and well thats another tale.

well we get out prize home and we start out father son project well it lasted about one year. now i am the proud owner of a 86 ford ranger,

well so far i removed the rear and cut off the mounting pads and flipped them to the bottom, it dropped the truck about 4" or 5" . bolted the front fenders to the radiator support and made a one piece front end, lift off hood, installed one race seat, installed a jy(junkyard) 302 out of my cousins 70 mustang. and am currently moving the trans member forward to accomidate the c-4.

motor mounts are custom 1/4 plate 8 x 8 in sq welded to the frame and notched for the 86 f150 mounts, pan is late model mustang/truck 5.0.

headers are from late model mustang the drivers side i had to rework by cutting off the #5 tube and rerouting along the head and then down to the collector.

oil filter relocation kit by Mr Gasket

the front of the truck was lowered by cutting 1 1/2 coil out of the spring (dont recommend this) camber is way out.

thats all i can think of right now will be happy to answer any questions

Cool project. That is great that you got it for $31. Did your son learn some things from this project? There is some good info info in your post for a 5.0 swap too. I can't wait to see some pics of it laying rubber.

sweet, i wish i woulda had a chance to work on a truck like that with my dad. it wasnt when i was 13, it was when i was 17 and rolled it. we put a whole new cab on it. looks like a great project, keep us updated.

ok got the trans crossmember moved and all done, lengthened drive shaft 6" almost finished welding the drivers side header.

(Dangeranger3: Did your son learn some things from this project?)

yes he learned that he would just buy something from now on. LOL

seriously he learned a few things but he is 15 now and there are other things on his mind.
