1986 Ranger 2.9 problems

Got new MAP sensor. Still running like shit, running rich. FPR is brand new.

O2 sensor?

ok stop replacing, you got a code reader? If not get one, and pull the codes from the computer.

Got a new map sensor, still running terrible. running rich but FPR is brand new and fuel pressure tested fine. O2 sensor?

Sorry didnt think that went through the first time. and I dont have a code reader. Check engine light is not on.

The check engine light doesnt come on for a 86 if something goes wrong, the computer stores codes though.

Alright, where would I get a code reader?

Auto Parts Store, just a basic one for a EECIV connector with a digital readout is best.

The diagnostic port is located under hood between airbox and fender when you get a code reader.

I did the test light method of getting codes, but just had a steady light.

steady light means 1 of 2 things: either you didn't use the proper method of reading the codes, or your computer is screwed.

I'd lean towards the former. Make sure you've got the test jumper in the right spot, and you're running the light to the right pin, etc.

Spott

Triple checked, still just getting a steady light. I unplugged the fuel pump relay and started the engine, and it ran almost perfectly until it lost all pressure. Do you think the Brand new fuel pressure regulator could be bad?? I never checked the fuel pressure with the new one installed.

Fuel pressure tested OK

Quit pissing around and get a real code reader and go from there, your only waisting time and creating overdue aggravation playing around with a blinking light. Believe me you will thank yourself for having a code reader, simplifys things greatly!

Have you replaced the PCV valve probably the most neglected general maint item change it with the spark plugs it cannot be cleaned. Disconnect the battery and clean the IAT or MAF sensor and pull the AIC and clean around the throttle butterfly and the IAC port. Allways disconnect the battery for 1/2 an hour when cleaning or changing a sensor to reset the computer values and run it at least 20 minutes at medium speeds to set new ones.
