1986 Ford Ranger Issue

I have a 1986 Ford Ranger V6 2.9, the other day I changed the distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs and wires. Once I started it it appeared to run just fine for a few moments and then all of the sudden it acted as if it was about to stall and black smoke comes from the tail pipe. Since then the stalling acts and the black smoke have been consistent.

I have checked the air filter, all of the vaccum lines and all have passed inspection...so now I don't know what to look for next.......any suggestions?

Were the cap and rotor cheap ones? There may be an issue with one of those. Clean up the old ones if you still have them and put them back on.

Blue smoke = oil burning. Black smoke = fuel burning. Methinks you didn't crank it down tight enough and the timing slipped and it's seriously delayed. Just a hare-brained hypothesis but probably worth checking.
