hey guys i aint been on here in about a year or so. i just got an 86 ranger 4x4 with 2.3. The problem im having is after 15 or 20 mins of run time the truck dies. the other day it wouldnt start at all. The tan wire coming out of my fuel pump relay would not ground when the key is on. That wire goes directly to the computer. I have limited tools but i have checked everything i can and it all works. Should i go ahead and put a computer on it or do you guys have any other ideas on what i should check.:annoyed:

check all grounds for loose/dirty connections/broken wires

appreciate the help. i did a continuity test between the plug at the computer and all grounds coming out. everything checked out. put a new tfi modual on no difference. grounded my fuel pump relay, made it work, truck died after about thirty mins. sounded like the egr opened all the way up crack the throttle and it died.

new update. unplugged the egr no change. unplug the egr position sensor and it will run as long as the fuel relay is grounded. only connection i see is computer.

put a computer on it. ran little over half an hour and did the same crap. Gonna do fuel pressure test hopefully this week. Maybe that will tell me something.

pulled the pump out of the tank. didnt need a fuel pressure test to know it was screwed. half a float left, no electrical connections left, coupler not there between pump and tube coming out. ill try to get pics up next week. i haven't ever seen a sending unit eat up this bad.

Ditto on my 87

Sounds exactly like my 87 wonder whats up?:icon_confused:

How the heck did it chew up a sending unit? only explanation i can think of is an explosion :shok:

hey guys my tuck is running great and my fuel gauge works. the unit wasn't "chewed up" it was eat up. i dont know if it was ethonol fuel or if it was messed with. half the float was gone and the electrical connections were "eat in two". changed the pump and unit all is working well.
