I have a 1984 bronco2 the speedometer doesn't work and I've narrowed it down to the gear inside the transfer case. Does anyone know where to get one or a part number to look it up. It's got the bw1350 transfer case

Welcome to the forum

You have a BW1350 transfer case, and it could have a 6 tooth gear, it was red

Part number is 1350-110-003

BW 1354 was used late 1980's and up and I think its the same gear fitment but all were 7 tooth(yellow), these are readily available
So it would fit your BW1350 but you may need to change the Driven gear, the one on the end of the cable to calibrate speed

So you put a drill on the end of the cable and speedometer works?

Thank you for your reply. Yes speedometer works by turning the gear on the cable and I put my finger in and it feels like the gear inside is cupped out. Do you know the part number for the 1354 gear

Welcome to the site.

Same BW part number for both 1350 and 1354, 1350 110 002<<last digit is different, 7tooth

Looks like most places are "out of stock", like here: https://cobratransmission.com/bw1354-speedo-gear-55002070-1

1998 and up transfer cases don't have these, which is why they are getting harder to find as time goes by, part was last used 25 years ago

Might want to post in the "Wanted to buy" section, here: https://www.therangerstation.com/forums/index.php?forums/parts-vehicles-wanted.173/

There may be some with damaged transfer cases they use for parts and would be willing to sell the speedo gear

If you have no luck getting this done cheaply, Dakota Digital makes nice after market speedometers, I have one.

Sometime after July 22nd I am going to the scrap yard to pick up 2.8L exhaust manifolds or headers, if you still need a speedo gear let me know and I will try grabbing a few.

How does Dakota Digital get their speed reference signal? I hope it's not from a sensor in the speedometer cable.

There are a few ways
If vehicle doesn't have a rear axle ABS sensor you can install a 2 or 4 magnet clamp on the transmission end of the drive shaft, and install a sensor to read the passing of each magnet to get a speed signal, which you calibrate using Dakota SGI-100BT
(add-on cruise control kits used this method, prior to VSS being more common)

And you can also get a speedometer cable drive motor, if dash uses/needs a cable drive, its a 12v electric motor that spins the stock speedo cable, it's used with VSS or the SGI-100BT to get the correct rotation speed
This is used all the time on older vehicles when owners want the look of stock dash but the convenience/reliability of newer drivetrains which never had speedo cable hook ups

I plan on using the Ford speedo kit, basically stick a speedo transmission gear on the end, attach the vss to the transmission, run the wires to the speedo. If my transmission does not have it (being a 4x4) then I will go the hall effect sensor route or upgrade to a later model 8.8 axle.

The transfer case output shaft would have the speedometer connection on a 4x4, 1997 and older Rangers
