1984 Ranger School House Rescue

I purchased an old 84 Ranger 4X4 it would barely run but I got it home and now the work begins a lot of the electronic wires are melted going to the carb and emissions I would like to go to a 2100/2150 carb and distributor this possible?

I have look into this looks like it is about $250 dollars in parts been looking into a distributor that has coil and vacuum advance all in one.
