1984 Parking brake won't release

Recently I have been having problems with my release lever not releasing my parking brakes. I usually have to yank it real hard a few times to get the brakes free. I can also push the parking brake down slightly and pull the lever back to get it to release but it no longer "pops" as it use to.

It feels like it's not catching anymore and I have no idea how the actual mechanism works as I can't get a good view of it. Both my haynes and ford shop manuals give me no information on this particular piece.

I would appreciate it if someone could give me an explanation on how the lever releases the parking brake or a picture would be nice.

I drive this truck daily so it's not a case of the brakes being left engaged for months on end. It more or less just started doing it one day after work.
