1984 bronco II engine swap

I have an 84 bronco II that i blew the engine mudding and I am wondering what is going to be the easiest and cheapest replacement i can do for it as I do not have a huge excess of money and I love my truck but I need something i can drive, when i got the truck it wasnt running all that great until i did some work to it but its just really old and finally gave out. I would like to know what engine would be the easiest to put in and cheapest. There are not 2.8's around here as I know that would be a clean swap but what is the runner up?

There is only one easy choice and that is a 2.8 to put back in it. Nothing else is easy. YOu can't carb a 2.9 or 4.0. So if you are staying with a carb, you might as well go to a 302. But it's some work. You can hack it together in a couple weekends or you can do it right and it will take some time. But it's a huge improvement over the lousy 2.8. If you want to use a 2.9 or 4.0, then you need a donor vehicle because there are a millions little things needed to switch this truck to fuel injection. There are your choices really.
