Hello, everyone. I am planning on purchasing a new Ranger, and just returned to these forums after a 5-6 year hiatus.

I used to have a 2004 Ranger and came here for tips and tricks. I had to get rid of it 5 years ago (abt 140,000 miles) as the timing chain guides came apart; sold it to someone who could fix it.

Now, I need to learn all about the new Ranger before I buy. I must say, I am veeeery hesitant about buying a truck with a 4-cylindar engine in it so I need all the info I can learn about the longevity of the only powerplant offered in North America.

Cheers!

I'm hoping the next gen Ranger has at least two powertrain options... maybe even a hybrid. But those aren't coming for another year or so. It would also be nice if the manual transmission from the Bronco made it to the Ranger.

I've never driven the Ecoboost 2.3... but the numbers are pretty impressive. Like with most things... maintenence is going to be the key to longevity.

Welcome back to TRS...

The new ranger and its silly little 4 banger is miles more truck than any ranger we got before 2019, even the 'mighty' 4.0.

Longevity will come down to your use of the truck and how well you maintain it, same with any other vehicle.

I have 30k miles on my '21. Zero regrets about my purchase and zero doubts about getting to 200k with not much more than basic maintenance.

The transfer office just traded in their 19s....over 200k....nothing broke.

They have a maverick and some transits now.

What is the regular maintenance and intervals according to the owners manual other than the typical fluid and filter changes?

This may help a guy/gal out when looking into purchasing one new or used. It would let us know when timing chains/belts and other things are due for servicing so we know what bills may creep up on a person.

wasn't someone talking about turbo problem on high mileage trucks??

those ecoboosts are great engines in the 4 cylinder models. those are the only ones i have ownership experience with.

my son's got the ecoboost in his focus and has 115k or something on it with zero engine trouble. i don't even know where the battery or anything was on our ecoboost powered escapes, the wife used to have. i might have opened the hood on any of those three cars once or twice but i sure cannot tell you for sure that i did because there were such solid cars

Welcome back.

Everything made by anyone has the potential to be a problem at high mileage.

If an individual wants to really go to high mileage with a turbo vehicle, they'll probably be replacing the turbo at some point. Start checking it's health around 100k miles or so.

The trucks have a chain, and there's no interval listed in the manual iirc. The reccomended maintenance isn't enough IMO. 10k mile oil changes and Ford doesn't say to change out the trans, axles, and t-case until 150k. I've been doing 5k oil changes, had the rear end and t-case done at 27k.. around 60k I'll do the rear end and t-case again along with the front axle and I'll start exchanging the trans myself. Then I probably won't worry about any of it again for another 50k or so.
