1354 transfer case help!

hey, everyone new to this site but not new to problems with my explorer, I have some questions i hope can be answered. I have a 92' explorer with the bw 1354e t-case, my problem is that when in gear 2wd or 4wd i get a lot of noise coming from the t-case almost like the chain is slapping the case internally. Can anyone steer me in the right direction on what my problem my be. Do i need to find a new transfer case or can i get away with a new chain and output shaft?

If it were me, I would check the fluid level then pull the tcase out, while engaged in 4x4, and check for play in the chain. If there is excessive play, id look for a good, used tcase. 1354e tcases are a dime a dozen by me, really easy to find. Make sure to look over the used tcase as well. just my 2 cents, if it means anything to you.

thanks for the reply i will have to try that, i think it is about time for another t-case because i have had nothing but problems with mine.

How about just unhooking the driveshafts and spinning it by hand with the transmission in neutral? I would double check that it's the t-case before doing anything. If thats' the case, grab a used t-case or grab a new chain.

ok let me ask you guys one more thing, what is a reasonable price range for a used t-case. I found someone local that wants $400 and look online im finding them anywhere betweern $100-$300.

I'm in wisconsin, and $400 is crazy to me, heck i'll have 2 1354e's, 1 1354m, and 1 1350m myself by next weekend. a decent 1354e brings anywhere from $50-$150 here, depending on where you go. I'd search craigslist before i go to the yards, can usually find stuff cheaper on there from my experience
