Changed the oil seal not too long ago because it was leaking, as indicated by the drip right under it, and spray pattern above it. Made sure no seal was left behind the flange, but its still leaking. The flange is properly torqued too. Front out-put doesn't leak. Pinions don't leak, nor the diff cases...

On the other hand... I also have a leak (and it's NOT the shift rail plugs, did that mod with red-permatex) along the trans (M50D-R1) to extension housing seal. The extension housing to t-case doesn't leak.

Ideas on why the output is still leaking? Or what else can cause the ext housing leak, besides it just being a bad gasket (looks like gray-permatex...). Its going on time for a new trans, or at least a rebuild anyway.

I had skimmed over something in another thread about if you hear a sound from the trans when in neutral and clutch out, but nothing when clutch in/in gear, the trans input bearing is going. Definite YES on that...

Do you remember what the shaft looked like ? The journal , the shiny area, does it have a dull line in it? That is where the seal contacted. For best results, you don't want re- use the contact area again. You either hang the seal out a bit or drive it in a bit more. If you use RTV fine , but I prefer the Aviation Forma-Gasket. Also, check out the speedo connection. Or just keep up with the leak until you replace the trans. I like the 5spd M5OD. It is my 1st manual in 25 yrs.

Just saw what you use your 94 for. My 1st truck was a 54 IH walk in . Orange, ex delivery van. On the sides, it was written : " Intergalactic Brain Police" So I kinda have a an idea where you're coming from, Fritz T

No I don't. IIRC the seal has a lip inside to seat itself on, which I did seat it to. I will have to check the speedo gear. If that does leak, could a dab of gray-permatex do the trick (well it probably would) but is it safe to use on that application?

I've been thinking about painting this truck Deep Purple with thirteen stars and criss-cross bars on the roof. Now that I just typed that out, putting thirteen gold-metallic stars into the side would look nice too.

Dumb question... seal lip faces out or in ?

Speedi-sleeve would fix a groove (if it turns out that, that is the case),

Lip faces in.

Greg

IIRC the lip is on the inside, so you can't push the seal in too-far, but nothing is preventing it from coming out besides the flange itself.

They don't usually come out on their own.

If you suspect the speedo gear, pull it out, run some MOPAR black ATF resistant RTV around the o-ring and put it back in.

Any idea why the output still leaks, adsm?

And when I stepped out for a cigarette earlier I checked the book in the truck, the schematic shows an inner lip, with a bearing set maybe 1/8" to 3/16" behind it, judging by my recollection and the schematic scale. It also showed a seal behind the flange nut, which I do believe was there, and in good shape. Besides that it's not coming from the flange, its coming from the out-put hole. My flange still has bright-silver around it from the anti-sieze (to keep the U-joint and flange from sticking when I have to pull it again).

Would $250 be a good deal for a used m50d, that was rebuilt? Stated as 0 miles on the rebuild, with either 100k or 200k on the original parts (5 digit-odo). Likely still beats the 225 on my trans. For another $25 I can get the matching 1354E (all original), whether or not I use it. Should I buy them, I'd still keep the old units just in case...
