1354 compatibility

Gents, fairly new to the site. I'm sure this has been discussed numerous times but I'm unable to find my answers. Here goes, I have a 98 Mazda b4000 automatic 4wd ( electric shift ). I need to replace the transfer case. I found a 1354 ( also with the shift motor ) off of a 2001 ranger with a 3.0 engine. Are they compatible? Thanks in advance!!!!

As long as the front output is the same you are good to go. There was a change somewhere around 98, but I don't remember where the split is.

Thanks adsm08, I'm probably jumping the gun. My transfer case output has way too much excessive play, not to mention it sounds wonk wonk going down the road. After perusing through Craigslist I found this fella asking $250 for a case with the shift motor on it. I read somewhere posted ( not this site ) that a 3.0 uses a different unit as opposed to the 4.0, but not so sure how accurate that is. My front suspension utilize CV axles, I got rid of the vac hubs and just converted the whole damn thing to live axle configuration. And contrary to what others have said, I didn't see any mpg drop compared to when it was freewheeling hubs. So basically your saying the 1354 behind a 3.0 is the same as the one trailing a 4.0?

Yes he is. You need a late '97+ 13-54, doesn't matter what engine it was behind.
