I recently discovered my 1350 on my '83 Ranger was damaged because the hose from the pump snapped off at the input shaft and it cooked some stuff up there. I have another T-case from a parts truck and was wondering if there is any way to check the operation of the pump short of taking it apart and inspecting it? On the damaged one I just removed the bolts from the front of the case and tapped until it came off with the planetary gear and all. Is that safe to do with a good one? As you can see I know nothing about surgery on a T-case.

No way to know for sure without inspecting it.

An easier way to get at it is to remove the rear driveshaft flange/yoke, then pop the rear half of the case apart (leave the front together for now). The pump will be right there to look at (though removing it IIRC will require removal of a few more parts off the output shaft).

Is it possible to check the operation of the pump and maybe change the hose? The "thing" the hose connects to on the input/output shaft on the fried T-case I have spins around. I would think it is supposed to be stationary....right?

The more I think about it....the pump must be the part that is up on the imput/output shaft, since some thing has to be turning to make it pump. And the hose and what ever is on the end is just a pick-up tube.....sound right or am I messed up?

Eric

Yes, the hose is just the pickup tube connected to the pump (should have a little screen on the end).

Sounds like the holding tab for it broke if the whole thing is just spinning around (not a completely unheardof failure).
