I've converted an old treadmill into belt sanding duties and have shorted out the circuit board with metal dust.....ooopss! A new board is $150. I don't want to spend that much and also don't need the variable speed control [pwm], I do think the soft start is a good option tho. Can anyone recommend a power supply for me? The motor is;
mcmillan electric company
model s334802683
dp fitness p/n 3s547600
120vdc 6.0amp 2.25php
insulation class 130-2(b)

PS; I just started researching dc and don't know a whole bunch about electricity in general, tho I'm trying
I will also be isolating the circuit board from the dust in the future. Can the motor handle the dust? Or do I need to isolate it as well?

Thanks,

Richard

Why not just replace the motor with a sealed model and forget all the other electronics? Standard belt sanders don't have a soft start feature and they run just fine. I'd search for a replacement motor and dump the electronics myself. Electronics in a wood/metal shop don't get a long LOL.

When you say sealed model do you mean ac? My wag would be I need a 2 hp ac motor to accomplish the same torque, but I'm very much in the learning phase. I'll check into it. Thanks,

Richard

I do have that many batteries kicking around.....hmmm
Or use my dc welder.....it's on my wishlist.

I use industrial process DC motors for augers and fans that are varable speed, for the outdoor boilers I build.

The are called 90 VDC motors. (there is a 180 V version as well) 90 = 120, 180 = 240.

The motors are brushed and most are PM (permanent magnet) with only an armature circuit.

DART (Dart Controls, Zionsville, IN)

They Make some inexpensive (but well made) dc controllers, used ones, can be e-bayed for like 30 bucks. the 125 series with the DV-C option is what you would want for a 120 volt system.

the total voltage trimmer will get you all the way out to 117 DC if needed, they have 1/2-5 hp models all based on the 90 vdc output.

just re-read Richard's original post... PM me with a phone number, I'll call you on my nickel.

No a sealed unit doesn't have any external openings for dust and dirt to get into it. It would be an AC unit. Get rid of that electronic circuit board and get yourself a 110VAC electric motor such as this http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-PERMANE...885?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a1a92256d.

The sealed unit doesn't have any openings that would allow dirt, dust, or other debris into the internal workings of the motor causing it to burn out.

I took a q-tip to the board and vacuumed. I scraped some silverish residue from between 2 of 3 terminal belonging to the potentiometer and a screw head connected to ground. i couldn't find any other signs of damage so hooked it back up......

and it worked!!!

I didn't have time to play with it as I had to meet a customer but I'm happy with how it's turned out so far. I'll take pics of how I isolate the board and motor and post later.

Richard

I did find an interesting site in my research. Seems like good, easily understood general and specific info and some good links;

Could be fun too.
