I quit watching porn so I could watch this. My god was it worth it. That thing is awesome!

Pretty much says and shows it all...the process of getting up and gettin going after about age 55. Preheating the muffler bearing before you throw the flywheel is always a good idea, plenty of meds in the oil sump, and lots of lube on the moving parts keeps it all together!!

I saw a Wheel Horse garden tractor w/ a hit & miss engine placed on it. That thing would bounce the front wheels off the ground.

Being in the mechanical design field, had to look it up, couldn't understand a little of the mech motion. Really interesting. Spent many years working on governors almost that old. These things were usually designed by people with no formal schooling. First design of a diesel engine, the blow torch heated up a bulb, same as a modern glow plug. Spinning the flywheel was the starter like a lot of early tractors.

Spinning the flywheel was the starter like a lot of early tractors.

Tractors had manual starting options well into the 50's, nearly the 60's for some makes.

John Deere was big on spinning the flywheel, they were about the only one with a crossmotor setup for a long time. Everybody else had a mechanism into the front the crankshaft pulley as time went on.

My '46 John Deere B has the optional top mounted "coffee grinder" starter.

Needs a turbo...

What did they use this engine for?

Oh, I guess pumping water:
1909 10HP Blackstone oil engine was used for pumping water from a river to a market garden. The engine was sabotaged in the 1920s by someone blowing up the cylinder with explosives. A new cylinder was installed and the engine was returned to service for a number of years when it eventually fell into disuse. A number of river floodings submerged the engine and it was eventually partially buried in silt. It was recovered in the 1990s and in 1997 it was dismantled, cleaned and started again after many years of neglect. The starting procedure requires heating of the hot bulb with a blow lamp in order to vaporise the fuel ( kerosene ) and to preheat the internal combustion chamber to allow fuel ignition.

10 horse is more than I would have expected.

Thing is pretty cool, looks like it would rip off a finger or two if your not careful

Yep, but very slowly...ouch, ouch, ouch.

When that engine was built, common sense was common and people were responsible for their own safety. Not so much anymore...

And yet there were a lot more people running around missing fingers, hands and arms from it getting caught in machinery if they were lucky enough to survive.

Yep, but you could pay the docs off with chickens and hogs back then, too. It's amazing how many people survived maiming accidents and amputations before they knew anything about germs, disinfectant, etc. Talk about a crap shoot.
