'10 Explorer Roof Rack Crossbars Question

The roof rack crossbars that came on our '10 Explorer are canted aft. This makes using bolt-on kayak carriers useless because the carriers secure slanted aft. I looked at an '07 Sport Trac that has factory crossbars parallel with the roofline. Does anyone know why Ford would install canted crossbars? And, does anyone know if crossbars are interchangeable between late model Explorers and Sport Tracs?
