Does anyone have a engine length for the 2.8 from back of the block to the front of the damper?

Can we have a location, some information about yourself.........

Just going by standard history, I'd say someone on here can answer your question, but a thousand people make one post on here with some off the wall question, then not only never reply again, they never log on again and it's a huge waste of all the members time.

Isn't that what these forums are for? Sharing of information! I have a project of removing a v4 and installing a v6. I just needed to know the length of a 2.8 v6. I looked through all your tech info and found tranny lengths but no engine lengths. I'm sorry but where I'm from and what I drive has no bearing on my project. Thanks
Bruce

If you think your Ranger has a 1.7L V4 then maybe a swap to a V6 might be a little over your head....... and then if you have something as advanced as a 1.7L V4 (if it exists) why would you swap to a 2.8L V6 (unless it is some euronese V-tech V6)........

There are inline 4cyl with a ton more power than a 2.8L V6........

im assuming this guy lives in europe, and there is in fact a 1.7l v4 used in ford cars over there... and he is obviously not putting this in a ranger. why doesnt somebody try to help him out instead of busting his balls for no reason??

to the OP: it would be nice to hear a little more about where youre from and what your project is... obviously not what people are expecting.

if this is the case then i retract my statement.

I wasn't trying to bust his balls, I wanted to see this... I've never seen one before...

with just a little bit of research ive found that a 2.8 should bolt in place of the 1.7 v4, it sounds like everything fits from motor mounts to transmission bell housing to exhaust... i can see why he wants to do this swap.

Since the engine mounts and gearbox connections are identical between the Ford Cologne V6 engine and the V4, some vintage V4 Saab 96s were modified to take a V6, for rally racing, although this dramatically changed the weight distribution and steering characteristics.

The Cologne V6 was made to be very compatible in installation with the Taunus V4, having the same transmission bolt pattern, the same engine mounts, and in many versions, a cylinder head featuring "siamesed" exhaust passages, which reduced the three exhaust outlets down to two on each side. The latter feature was great for compatibility, but poor for performance.

to the OP: i have a 2.9 sitting on a stand i can take measurements from if it will help you. i dont know if its the same as the 2.8, but if you think it will help i can go measure it...

But I want to know what it's going in...... it's not going into a UFO in area 51, so why can't we hear about this sweet project?

One of us may want to do a similar swap one day and have the information archived.

v4 to v6 swap

Ok guys here it is. You are right about the v4 being a mostly euro motor. Made in Cologne Germany. You guys should know that your v6's are the descendants of the 1.5 and 1.7 v4's. Mainly the same motor with 2 more cylinders. Now is were my project comes in. Ford also used this v4 as an industrial motor. I have a 1978 Mustang skid steer loader with guess what for a motor? Now you get it? I rebuilt the motor 8 years ago for a small fortune and I did all the work except for the machining. The v4 is a piece of expensive junk. I know the v6 will bolt right up but there is only so much room lengthwise because of the counter weights for a different motor to fit. That is why I thought asking you guys for that dimension would be a piece of cake. The parts for the v4's are hard to come by and expensive. It was cheaper buying the parts for the SAAB car than from an Ford industrial motor supplier. Anyway, if it will fit I get more hp and torque and cheaper more abundant parts for the future. If I'm lucky I can sell the v4 and the proceeds will pay for the swap. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks all! Bruce

Not sure how many people have 2.8Ls on a stand, but I think you would be good with a 2.9L measurement. I will just take a measurement for you if I get a chance out on the garage this evening. It will be a couple inches too long since I have a majority of the engine disassembled and need to put the balancer back on. Or maybe Kunar will do it. :icon_cheers:

Might have better responses from the 2.8L section under V6s as well, someone that can measure may not follow this section that much. I will also check in Sven Pruett's book, he may have already documented this.
