Just bought an 07 ranger at an auction. Unfortuneatley the knock isn't heard until the engine warms up so I did not catch it. Truck had plenty of oil in it but the oil filter was plugged. How should I proceed? Is it possible to just replace the rod bearing or will I most likely need a crank shaft aswell?

Got quotes today for a used engine replacement the cheapest of which was $1500. This was labor fluids filters and a used engine with 81K miles and a 90 day warrenty. What do you think?

If you trust the knucklehead installing it.Be very wary of engine condition.I would expect a nice motor from a newer truck(07 or so) such as yours.Junk yard motors will seemingly always be listed as "90,000 miles or so".If you have the time, get a rebuilt .You wont have to worry about it ever again if it was done right. On the other hand an OEM Ford part is typically ultra reliable if there was no mischief created by the previous owner.I would try for a 40,000 mile(or so) wrecked documented donor and some kind of references from the assembler.
