My credo
A legend to the old man, a hero to the child...
My brother in law (who, is about as mechanical as marth stewart) is having issues with his 07 focus and wants me to take a look, tomorrow, which is why this is not in non RBV tech...

Either way, its having a hard to start issue. He says it cranks like 12 seconds before it fires, normally after it sits a few hours or a night...

Hes had a shop replace plugs, IAC, mass air flow, fuel pump/filter, and a valve cover (no idea how this relates).

He said it runs fine otherwise.

I know nothing about these motors. Or the car in general, except its got 130k on the clock, so i wouldnt think itd be compression/valvetrain issues.

I plan on running a fuel PSI test and prolly vaccuum for poos and laughs.

Do these have the little check ball in the regulator like the old stuff does? Thats what it sounds like to me.

But any and all info is apperciated.

Fuel pressure sounds like a good start to me as well. You can try cycling the key a few times as well to see if that makes a difference.

I told him to try that but i aint heard back from him yet.

It sounds like the check valve to me too.

It is part of the fuel pump assembly.

Have fun.

Most of the time when old engines long crank it's low compression. I'd double check the fuel system too. But I work in a dealership and I see cars that Take Abit to crank over all the time, it's normal to an extent. Hell I have seen brand new cars that will crank for a solid 10 seconds before they fire. But my 88 B2 100k mi, if you wait for the fuel pump, will fire on the 3rd revolution every time.

Guessin he sells kias/hyundais/GM.

Only thing ive seen slow to start because of compression is small engines and my dads town and country with 350,000+ mi.

Its possible, but 130k on anything made past 1986 is nothing. If i hit the key on somethinh new and it took 10 seconds to pop id run.

Sounds to me like the crank sensor is giving issues. After 10 seconds of cranking. The computer will read the cam sensor and fire off that.

Think they screwed him on the fuel pump....listen closly to this video....

Thats key cycle priming. He told them it didnt sound right, they said it was normal. No way in hell.
