sorry guys i no its not the right forum but you have been so helpful with my ranger so figured id ask.. ive got an 06 f150 5.4 xcab manual 4x4 shifter on the floor pull it into 4hi the light comes on on the dash and it makes a bad clicking noise same thing in 4lo just like 2 wheel drive low and clicking noise.. this truck is NOT a beater the wife uses it to haul the kids and and grocries getter so its babied :icon_confused:

Does the front drive shaft spin?

Check the automatic front hubs, they had an update or something to keep water from messing them up IIRC.

With the update they are pretty reliable.

Yes and no. Kinda.

Water gets into the vac control solenoid, messes it up, then runs down the lines and messes up the hubs. It makes them noisy, but it is a chatter, happens mostly when you really get into the gas or when the 4x4 is engaged.

The hubs (Integrated Wheel Ends as Ford calls them) are spring loaded and vacuum disengaged. Their default mode is to be locked in. So unlike the Ranger hubs that get a momentary apply of vacuum to engage AND disengage the F-150 hubs get vacuum in 2wd as long as the engine is running. When the command goes out to shift into 4x4 power is taken from the solenoid, the spring pushes the collar over, and the hub locks in.

Given that the front drive train engages but the hubs seem to not be locking completely I'd say your IWEs are shot.

The other thing to check before doing anything else, the vac line tends to break. Usually in the back of the engine bay in the area of the PCM.

yes it makes a clicking chattering noise slightly all the time and real bad when giving it throttle up a hill or in 4 wheel drive so what is a IWE adsm08?? where is it and how to fix it?
