Hey all. I’ve lurked around here on and off for years, consuming your combined wealth of knowledge on Rangers whenever I needed it. But it seems it’s finally time for me to start my own thread.

I’m looking to get new wheels and tires for my 06, and having a hell of a time understanding what will work and what won’t.

If you just want to answer my immediate question, I want to know if the wheels in this link (Vision wheels) with the same size tires (255/70R16) I have now will work for me with no issue.

If however, you’d rather educate me, which I’d appreciate, read on.

I do know that I need a 5x 4.5 /114.3mm bolt pattern, and that my stock wheels are 16x7 wheels with a 4.5” backspace with 255/70R16 tires.

My problem is that I’m not sure how offset and backspace work together, and how much backspacing I can have before it’s an issue.

Thanks!

even if they do fit they will suck the wheels inward a full inch. look at your existing wheels, can they move inward another inch? check the front while turning.
backspace is the depth of the back of the wheel. it is totally independent of the size of the wheel.
a 6" wheel can have 4.5 backspace, an 8" can, so can a 12" wide wheel. backspace basically ignores the front & width of the wheel.
a larger/deeper backspace pushes the wheel inward.

offset looks at the wheel mounting surface and compares it to the exact/imaginary center of the wheel.
that means 3 different wheels, 6", 8", and 12" that all have the same 4.5" backspace will all have different offsets because the middle moves.

Backspace is the distance from the back of the rim to where the wheel mounts to the hub face.

Offset is the position of the center portion of the wheel in relation to the center line of the rim.

For example, the wheels on a 1997 - 2001 Hinda CR-V and 2019-2023 Ford Ranger have a +55mm offset. So the face of the center of the wheel is slightly protruding past the face of the rim.

Wheels on the early model Rangers typically have something like a 3.75 inch backspace and roughly a +12 mm offset, if I remember correctly. So the wheel has a dish to it instead of being flush or slightly protruding with the rim face. I may be a bit off on the numbers, but that should give you the idea.

Thanks guys! That was really helpful! I actually have a decent understanding now.

I can’t seem to find any used wheels around me with proper backspacing and the correct bolt pattern, so looks like I’m stuck going new. Opting for 16x7s with 4” backspacing, 0mm offset. Pairing with some cheap 245/75 tires to offset some of the cost haha.
