05 Ranger Trouble

I've got this 05 2.3l rwd XLT. its an auto. when ever i go to depress the gas pedel too much (it sounds like 3rd or 4th gear)the engine or tranny revs beyound 4500 but i dont get the accelation. when the reving stops it has a hard knock to it. does anybody know whats wrong with it?

Transmission is probably on it's way out. Could be low on fluid though.
