After driving 45 min. or more in 90 plus temps when you come to a stop it kills the engine, like driving a manual and not pushing in the clutch. After it cools a little it works fine. Ive been told converter is not unlocking . So before I go in for complete overhaul (150,000 mile) with new converter. What tells the converter to lock and unlock? If an external sensor I think I wold want to try that first..Already had the power flush and some luberguard .:icon_confused:

Problem number one is the fact that you had it flushed. Flushing a high mileage trans has a tendency to stir up the goop and debris that settles from normal wear and tear and can clog up the filter/ valve body. As far as what tells the converter to lock/unlock I believe it is indeed a sensor and I would imagine its external but my knowledge on the Escape/Mariner/Tribute is limited. Someone else should chime in, I know I've seen threads about the Escape on here before.

As for doing the power flush, the problem was there BEFORE the flush and was the reason for the flush ,at the suggestion of my Trusted tranny man,to try and save me $1500.00.Until the converter acts up the trans works perfectly.

Curious, does it still stall if you come to a stop while it's in neutral? I don't believe it would stall in neutral if it was your converter.

Power flushing an already problematic transmission usually makes things worse. Depending on where you take it, some of the machines are at a higher pressure than it's used to and cause more damage.

FWIW - I'm 99.9% sure you can't replace the filter in it without removing the trans.

Does not stall in neutral in fact when it is acting up that is the only way you you can drive it, by putting it it neutral as you come to a stop.you are correct about the filter in fact the trans does not have a pan Fords better idea??? And again the trans is perfect except for when the converter acts up. Wife was driving it Saturday and it started but as soon as she pulled in the driveway is straightened up.

I also own an Escape (2006) and am a member of www.escape-central.com - I just rummaged around found there a bit and there is supposed to be a wire harness on the right side of the trans which is the lock up solenoid (which everyone says to start here). I'll quote the guy (major run-on sentence):

no you can pull a horse shoe clip it will come right out pull the wires off and replace if the solenoid is bad the car wil not lock up after 60 mile a hour third gear the solenoid has 5 volts some times these wire just maybe dirty and need cleaning
you can see the solenoid if you look on the right side of the trans only wires coming out of the trans.
my car was not slipping but the o/d light kept coming on.

I don't have mine with me, or I'd go look myself.....

I hope this helps

Thanks Shane I tried to join Escape central a year ago still waiting for activation. This is a heat not speed related problem and I have no flashing OD light. Thanks for pointing me to where I can find the lock up solenoid I will have a look at it. Thanks again Dennis

Had the same issue! I never got a confirmation like it said when I signed up. After a while I just decided to try, and my login stuff worked.

Your transmission is a CD4E. An all around good transmission. It does have a pan, but it's up on the side and hard to see if you aren't looking at it just right.

The fact that your problem seems to be heat related seems to me that your clutch is sticking when it gets hot. The lockup solenoid may be at fault, and I'd kinda try that first.

Beyond that, a new converter should fix it without total trans overhaul.

And a PROPERLY done trans flush will not kill a transmission that isn't already about to die. I flushed the trans on my sister's old car for the first time at 160,000 miles. I did it right, with the proper solvents, conditioners, and equipment. That transmission is still running strong (last I knew) even after the car itself got ruined by spending 5 hours under a broken water main.

I had thought about just having the torque converter replaced. BUT nearly half the cost of o-haul is r and r of trans. With nearly 150,000 miles I am not willing to risk the trans going out after just replacing the converter.

Definitely a torque converter clutch problem. Is it the solenoid or the converter that would be the question. You pretty much need to pull the trans to get the pan off if I remember correctly and the 6 cyl can be a mother to get the trans out in the first place. You need to pull the alternator and rear exhaust manifold for sure. That aside if you were going to put a converter in for all the effort to get at it it would be worth pulling it apart and going over it. But a definite would be a new TCC solenoid and converter.
