Ok, so this has my whole shop stumped.
We have two 2004 Tauruses, 3.0 Vulcan. Both are making a rattling, fluttering, noise coming from around the area of the heater core. Not audible with the windows down, not audible from outside the car. Both had excessive power steering noise and got pumps replaced without fixing the noise.
It peaks around 3200 RPM, is more audible when cold, but doesn't go away completely when warm. Serp belt off makes it much quieter, but I think the remaining noise I think is just something else, not belt driven, vibrating at a similar frequency because the engine is running at 32-friking-00 RPM. Idler pulley had play, put a new one on, no effect. Water pump has some play, but I don't want to throw parts at this stupid thing.
I know we have a lot of general mechanics and other dealership personnel around here. Has anyone else run into this noise and found the solution? I am one of the best sound and vibration guys in my shop. This has now stumped me, the shop foreman, and the next most senior tech for a combined total of +50 hours between the three of us and the two cars and we have yet to put a finger, wrench, or stethoscope on the culprit part.
