i have a 04 ranger w/ a 4.0 v6. it has 190000 miles. i have recently been having issues i feel are attributed to the fuel pump. the fuel filter has been changed twice in last 10000 miles, so i doubt its that. it doesnt happen often or everyday ( i drive 60 mls each way to work) but every once in awhile, the truck will start sputtering. it will sputter come out of a toll booth or just while cruising along. the other day , i drove to work and stopped at a store on way in. i was out of truck for 20 mins, came back and when i went to start it, all it would do is crank, wouldnt fire. sounded like it was starving for gas. i lightly pressed gas pedal a couple times and she finally fired up. hasnt happened since, though it is the 3rd time thats happened in last 3 months. my brother is a mechanic and has cleaned throttlebody, mass airflow sensor and done a full tuneup yet problem exists. he feels that a fuel pump does not gradually go, i have my doubts. anyone have this kind of problem or can give any insight of where to go next. i believe he told me fuel pump pressure test was 60.
now last night i attempted to drive to work 60 miles away. i was cruisin the parkway around 75 mph for about 15 miles whenn anytime i accelerated even a slight touch, she would bog down. then it got worse, it kept boggin and dropped to 60 then to 40, before i knew it i was sputtering along at 15. i turned for home and sputtered it home for 20 miles. the next morning, i fired her up like there was no problem, took it for a 5 mile ride, no sputtering no problem. its got us stumped. would a fuel pump gradually/sporatically go like that??? i am thinking electrical problem where maybe a module that sends power to fuel pump is acting up when she reaches a certain temperature. any help would be appreciated, dont feel like dropping in a fuel pump if thats not problem
