Oh, I wouldn't count on that. The top cover went through at least one revision.
It also may matter whether you're talking about the stick itself or the stub.
I see this "it's the same trans" claim all the time. No, not every M5OD is identical. There are several variations. 2WD vs. 4WD. Cologne vs. Lima vs. Vulcan. HD vs. non-HD. and so on. And this situation is thoroughly typical. There are very few transmissions that don't change throughout a run (unless that run is very short). If you want an example, try installing my SM465 into a Suburban or K-series. They came with them for many years, but you'll be in for a nasty surprise.
There was one change in the top cover on the M5OD-R1 that is relevant to this issue.
sometime late in 1993 The "Tower" where the stub lever installs into the trans
was made taller by approx 10mm, the "finger" that reaches inside the trans was of course made longer to match.
The FX4 shifter will fit the "tall tower" top covers used from late '93-current,
but not the "short tower" top covers used from 1988-93.
I'm not sure how the aftermarket Hurst shifter accomodates the '88-93 transmissions
or for that matter if it does so at all.... I have enough trouble paying my auto insurance and keeping my gas tank full to seriously consider a $200 aftermarket shifter
