`03 Level II, Yes or No?

They're certainly not as good as a locker, I'll give you that. But they are tighter than an average limited slip and usually last forever from what I've seen/read.

well my dad has one in his truck, it's l/s capabilities were gone by the time he had 25k miles on it. he took it to the dealer and they agreed, so they rebuilt it under warrenty. i'm not sure how many miles he has on it now, but recently he has been complaining of the same issues. it's no longer under warranty but i dont even think it's got 50k miles on it anymore. it's still drivable, but doesnt work any better than an open diff. the other truck is one of my brother's friends, i don't have the full story but it's failure was bad enough that it wasnt drivable. he took it to a shop and had it rebuilt. had i known, i could have saved him a ton of money, but it's a little late for that. i dont know if the failure of that axle was a diff failure or a r&p failure or what. didn't ford recall a hand full of torsen axles because of something? maybe that explains at least one of those failures? all i know is that when i decide to swap in an 8.8 into my truck, it will be an explorer axle, not an fx4 axle.

on a side note, is there any chance there is a lunchbox locker available for a torsen diff? anything that doesnt require gear setup? how difficult are they to rebuild the l/s unit?

They did recall all the manual trans lockers very early in the first year of production. Yours are the first post recall failures I can remember ever hearing of. Are you positive that your dad's locker is a level 2 Torsen and not a regular limited slip?

yeah, he has an '03 level 2. i've never had the diff cover off so i guess i cant say for sure, but all the level 2's had torsen rears. the problem with that one is just that the l/s doesnt grab as well as it should, its still absolutely drivable though. with the other truck i had talked about though, it's an '02 fx4, which got all the same equipment as the later level 2's, so that may well have been one of the bad torsen units in his truck. his axle failed in a way that was not drivable.

i work on axles for the military with the similar style lockers, i figure we must redo about 10-15 axles a month due to failure of the ls unit, there as unreliable as the govlock's were

i think he meant that that auto is the most reliable of the auto trannies in rangers. not the most reliable of all trannies.

yes that is what i ment. stick shift is far more reliable as well as preferred but for his applications it wil suit him fine
