'02 Ranger 5 sp. auto

I have a 2 wd Ranger with a 2.3 w/ a 5 sp. auto

Heres my problem---slips bad in reverse..put it in drive , slips the same as reverse, put it in low 1 or 2 and it'll move. After having it in drive for a few minutes and holding the brake and giving it gas, it starts to grab. But then my O/D light starts flashing. Is my trans shot or is it the computer controlled valve body. Really dont know how to test it---Hopefully someone can give me some pointers here on what to try

clutch packs are shot... 3rd and reverse use the same clutch pack... happened to me in my 03 ranger at 147k... start looking for a rebuild kit or a used or rebuilt trans... i pay $650 plus a core for a used trans with about 65k on it...
