To many to list
I have 04 fx4 level 2 with 4.0 automatic with a cracked case.
I got a couple 01 with 4.0 will these transmission work in the 04? Both are obviously 4x4 also
Thanks in advance.

Yes, 2001-2011 5R55E would work, they have the external ISS and OSS sensors added in 2001 and needed in a 2004
(2000 and earlier didn't have these extra sensors)

Level II can have manual shift transfer case, if so then make sure the 2001 has the shifter boss's(threaded holes) on the tail shaft housing, if not you can swap over the 2004 tail shaft housing, just 6 bolts, assuming its not the part that cracked, lol

Now would the vin numbers of both help determine this? They both got what I would say electric shift. But I am not 100% sure I guess same round knobs inside the trucks for engagement I know.
And unfortunately lol the back of the 04 is broken😡 image that hey.

If you have a switch on the dash for 4WD then its not a manual transfer case, so any 2001 - 2011 4WD 5R55E trans will be fine

And no, transmission type, or 2WD or 4x4 is not in the VIN, well not quite true the serial number is at the end of the VIN so VIN look up may have that info

Well I started pulling the transmission out of the donor Ranger. And upon further review it looks like it’s a 4R55E 18 bolts on the pan, instead of the 16 on the 5R55 on which I need to go into
my 04’ 🙁

As long as is coming from the same engine model and matches 2WD or 4x4 it will be fine

2000 Rangers were the last year to have the 4R COMPUTERS
The computer is what decides if a Ranger automatic transmission is a 4R or 5R, internally they are the same transmission

Now externally they are not, the 2001 and up automatics will have an ISS sensor above the shifter and an OSS sensor on drivers side rear
If you don't see those sensors then it IS a 2000 or earlier model, and will not work in a 2004

Seen here: https://www.transmissionrepaircostg...2018/03/Remanufactured-5R55E-Transmission.jpg
The red plugs are holes for ISS and OSS sensors

Earlier model seen here: https://shiftritetransmissions.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/4R55E_001-22.jpg
No holes for ISS and OSS sensors

Okay I took some pictures of it still in the truck. From what I see and location. I pretty sure these are the sensors your talking about?
So it should work then?
Thanks for your help 😊

Yes, that's a 2001 or newer automatic
