im wanting to swap to a manual transmission and don't know what transmission to buy, anyone know which one I should look for?

With all that would be involved with such a swap, you'd probably be better off selling the truck you have and buying one that has a manual transmission.

You only have one option, the M5OD. You'd need the trans, clutch, starter, pedal assembly, clutch master cylinder, clutch line and slave cylinder, manual trans ecu (or reprogram), clutch switch and wiring harness, evtm, and just a little bit of patience, but not much...

Dont' forget the flywheel, flywheel bolts, pressure plate, and pilot bearing. Starters are different but the auto starter can be modified. There is a lip that needs to be ground off to work. There are two different style flywheels, a 6 bolt and an 8 bolt I believe, you would want to find out which one you have. I didn't say it couldn't be done. Also, skills are equally as important as patience....If you've done this type of thing before, which I have, it's not that bad. If you haven't, you'll need help.

Me and my friend that is going to be helping me are both certified mechanics, so I guess you could say we're mechanically inclined. I just couldn't find out what transmission I needed. I'll be sure to have everything I'm gonna need before I start. Is there just one style of the m50D I should look for or just any?

This isn't the biggest challenge I am planning to do with this truck haha I'm gonna do the 4bt swap but that's awhile away. Thank you for the replies!

There are 4 types of the M5OD (2wd R1, 4wd R1, 2wd R2, 4wd R2) the R2 are from the full size rigs (V8), which won't bolt to the 4.0, but is an option for the 4BT swap, but the much stronger and desired ZF trans would be better...

Thank you for clearing that up, as for the ecU does it have to be from a 4wd? I have the switch 4wd and its acting up so I'm probably gonna swap to manual lockouts.

No, 4wd doesnt operate through the ecu, just has to be a manual trans ecu...

Also, you have the 8-bolt crank. 97 was the last year for the 6-bolt.

There's also the r1hd found in 4.0 sohc's. R1 is 4.0 ohv, 3.0 and 2.3's tranny. The r1hd will bolt to a ohv with one bolt not fitting (oh well 7/8 bolts is fine) and same with r1 on a sohc.

I didn't mean that as any kind of a slight. This being the internet, I never assume anyone's skill level.
