Hey all, I'm trying not to clog the board, but I know yall have the best chance of answering this for me.

AC clutch was engaging strangely. Off for 30 seconds on for 3. I gave it some throttle and it would engage longer but still cut out after 10 seconds or so.

Checked air gap and it was over .05 so way out. What compressor uses the nut and stud for these trucks instead of the bolt to affix the clutch?

Not sure if it was used on the rangers, but my 89 f250 A/C compressor uses the stud and nut, and it's a FS6.

P.S. I just looked up a 89 ranger, it used the FS6 also. If you have dealer added air, it used a SD709 compressor. It also looks like it has a nut holding the clutch in place.

If you look up in there, you should have washers on the shaft. That is how you set the clutch clearance.

Thank you very much! I was finding references to the fs10 and fx15 and it didn't really look right to me.

I only had two shims on the stud and when I removed the thinner of the two I'm at .01 so I need to pick up a shim kit and set the air gap first and then decide on the full clutch kit if it doesn't work after that.

It had factory air but was retrofit to r134a sometime before I got it back in 2000.

My f250 was doing the same thing. I stumbled onto the fact the gap was too wide. I took one of the washers out, and it indeed made the gap too small, and the compressor shaft would turn once in awhile, even though it wasn't activated. I figured it would wear in, and it did and it did fix the intermittent cooling problem.
