real world mpg in a ranger

ok. what do you guys get in you 2wd/4wd rangers. im talking daily drivers, city mpg/highway mpg.

what is the realistic mpg you guys get? i know the 2wd rated at 17-21 and 4wd 15-19 epa.

but i want realistic numbers. TIA

I get 15/16 daily driving around town. Short trips of 15 to 35 miles. On a freeway trip following a mobile home at 50 to 60 mph I once got 23 mpg. That was a 1200 mile slow trip and hasn't been repeated.

The milage estimates on the window sticker are made at 55 mph! The government hasn't changed the speed for the test since the speed limit was 55!

I have a 1999 Ranger with the 4.0, 5spd, 4x4, 3.73 gears, and LT235/85R16 tires. I drive about 60 miles a day total. Half city and half highway. I average between 17 and 18. I have gotten just over 19 once.

I have an '04 4x4 with the 4.0L SOHC, and get roughly 12-14 on the highway right now, with 3" BL and 305/70/16's, but at stock height with the 245/75/16s, I got around 16-18.

Right now I'm getting 17 to the gallon. A few weeks ago when I was in 4x4 all the time I got 14, and in the summer I get around 19-20. That's on a 265/75r16 A/T with 4.10 gears.

just bought a 2001 4.0L 4x4 and the first tank on it was 16.5 with mixed city/highway driving. just filled it up tonight and got 19! Put new plugs, wires, pcv valve, fuel filter, k&n air filter, cleaned the MAF sensor, changed oil, and bumped the tires up to 44psi when i got it. Got new 02 sensors on the way also.

44psi??? What kind of tires are you running? That's nuts! You'll get better mileage, but wear the center of your tires out much quicker! Which will cost more in the long run? (that's a question not a comment cause financially it could work out either way depending on how you drive and all.) I wouldn't recommend that high of pressure from a safety standpoint though.

i have found that if the tire size is pretty near stock, running at max psi for the tires resulted in better mileage and no adverse tire wear.

my 33" bias ply swampers on the other hand, i ran at 20 front/15 rear.


i'm getting about 15 mpg (average of over a year of tracking) out of my 4x4 F150 supercab with tires 3 sizes over stock. driving style is key.

Stock tires, dont know the size. says on the sidewall max load .... at 44psi

That's the maximum that tire can be inflated to without being damaged. Unless you are running a full load all day long there is no need for that much pressure. You will get a smoother ride, better traction, and longer tire life running your pressure between 32-35 psi.

Stock I got about 16mpg, Now I do good to get 12 OR 13.

I average around 17 to 19 mpg around the city but I do have 35s and 2wd and any where 21 up to 27 on the highway i also have 4.88 gears
