Kyle M's Ranger Rebuild

No problem, I have to live vicariously through your build... my work is getting in the way of my build!

Kyle, inspect those hubs VERY CAREFULLY!!! The inner bearing races are only held in by a circle clip, and if the grooves are worn or if the clip is worn or cracked, you will lose your wheel. The circle clip holds the hub and wheel on, not the outer wheel bearing nut!! (That's why you couldn't give me a corporate 14 bolt...)

Not quite....

"IF" there is a problem there you will get noise, and leak fluid. You will not loose your wheel. The hub cannot slip off because it cannot overcome the outer bearing, the race, and the locknuts. Only chance of "losing" the wheel would be if both bearings were destroyed. Its all sandwiched to the axle spindle via the bearings and the locknuts.

Watch out for this when you go to remove the wheel hub outer bearing and race. The bearing does not simply fall out of the end of the hub on most FF axles - its OD keeps it captive. Instead, a snap ring in the hub, accessible from the back of the hub (yellow arrows) needs to be removed so the wheel bearing can come out the back.

This is the view from the backside, if nothing else, if the clip fails the hub would move inward not outward.

I got a buddy that has a chevy 3500 had wheel bearing problems, pulled it apart, complete rebuild new inner and outer bearings and races and new seal, the truck didn't make it 30 feet and both tires (dually) came off. Pulled it apart only to find the retaining clip failed and the hub slid off...

LOL

What size did you use on the driveshaft?

I used 2.5" pipe. Got it at Central iron for like 8 bucks. It has close to a 1/4" wall.

I will pay extra close attention to it, but with how common the axles are and how often they are used, I don't know if I would worry too much. Thanks for the heads up!

Got some goodies today...

Then I made these after work today, spring hangers for the inboarded 63's

I also acquired some T case parts today to help with the doubler intermediate shaft. Thanks John! (CTB2) no pictures yet, but I will post plenty when I get going on it!

I've been thinking about inboarding, or mounting springs directly underneath the frame 'til I link the rear....

Is that a light duty 14 bolt? I know they actually made a 6 lug 14 bolt they put in the light dutys that would actually retain your 6 by 5.5 bolt pattern. If not, Im not sure if the shafts would interchange but if they would that would save you from havin to do adapters or changing wheels again.

The L/D 14 bolt is a semi-float diff like the 8.8's, he's running a FF.... it's also rediculously easy to 8lug a D44, so he might as well go that route so he's got matching wheels for a D60 8 months down the road....:thefinger:

lookin good kyle, I had a 14bolt lined up for mine before it bit the dust....someday.

Thats a FF 14 bolt, the SF 14 bolt has a 9.75" ring gear I believe, and has a more 'roundish' cover. Most guys dont consider the 9.75 a 'true' 14-bolt in that sense. When they say 14 bolt, they mean the FF version.

This isn't Pirate or Greatlakes so I am just gonna leave it alone. :icon_cheers:

I am offended that you are keeping tech from us simply because of the name of the website. Unforgiveable. :thefinger:
