but i agree that your comparison with the carbed stock explorer motor is fair against the efi one.most problems that people have with carbs is they don't get things set up right.i've had lots of carbs brought to me for rebuilds that were fine,but it turned out the ignition system had a problem.or a stretched timing chain.i find a lot of people want to blame the carb simply because they don't understand it.

And the die hard carb guys do the same with EFI, they don't know anything about it. "It must be something with the computer 'cause I changed the O2 sensers and it still runs like crap"

this is true too.

it come's down to what's already been said-each has it's place.i make my choice on which to run depending on what i'm doing with the rig.

That's what I've learned about carbs in the past twenty years, 90% of "carb problems" aren't a problem with the carb, it's something gone wrong with the ignition. And if you want EFI like performance from a carb, run it with an EFI cam grind and a good electronic ignition system. Cold starts and idling are no problem without a choke at temps down to 20* F.

and a consistant note from myself....efi hides too much stuff that one finds with a carb. especially when its chain time etc. i totally love a 400 hp 340, but you need to nurture the lil beast or will hate it.

i like efi cause it allows high performance for lazy and or low budget dummies.

i would argue overall performance and economy will be maximized with efi.

i've seen lots of people putting a 750 holley on a mild small block complaining that it 'just doesn't seem to have the power it used to'.

air velocity through the venturi at lower rpms is so slow that the fuel doesn't get to atomize.drop down to a 625 and response is improved dramatically.if you aren't going to see high rpms,go smaller yet.

Right ! Many don't take the time to understand what makes a carb work.
