ranger 5.0 swap

Hey guys I got some questions for ya. I have a 93 ranger single cab short bed 4.0 5 speed 4x4 and
I have some questions about a 5.0 swap...I have a 5.0 out of an 86 f150 its a carb'd engine....
I've herd I can use my stock manual tranny with an adapter but not sure...also what do I do about
My throttle cable and small stuff...will it work or do I need a diff one...I don't now much about carb'd
Engines just wanting some details...thanks

Didn't read thru the "stickys" did you ? Read thru them, then read again. Many of your questions will be answered there, that said, your transmission wouldn't last 5 minutes with the V8's torque. Adapters are a waste of time and money.

Maybe, maybe not. You'll never know the answer until you have the motor, transmission and transfer case in place. That's the last thing to worry about in the swap process. Engine placement is more important.

ok i read thru the "stickys" and they helped quite abit but im still uncertain of the throttle cable...im going from an efi 4.o to carb'd 5.0 will my stock throttle cable work or do i need a different one...i wanna be sure of most stuff before the swap to make it a little smoother. dont mean to bother thanks for any info

you are splitting hairs over whether or not the throttle cable will work.......
1 of 2 options:

1) the throttle cable does not work
2) it does work, and thankfully so because such a major, and otherwise un-solvable step to your v8 swap worked out

a v8 swap is in large part putting a square peg into a round hole.......it takes several steps of shaving the corners off the peg, and notching out the hole all of which is done as you go. if you are trying to plan this swap down the the smallest and most pointless detail (i.e. throttle cable) you are in for a huuuuuuge disappointment when about a hundred other little things won't fit as you had planned.

a swimmer knows how to swim and jumps into the water and just puts one arm after the other until he reaches the other side of the pool. he doesn't stand on the edge asking "after i have put my left hand, and then my right hand, and my left again.....then what do i do? i just want to plan........"

I bought a new 85 Stang cable at the local Ford Dealer on mine. Not sure if these are still available though, that was ten years ago. There are other cables that work too.

i built my entire throttle cable from scratch, using bulk cable, bulk housing sleeve, and soldered ends (all from my motion pro kit) i also had to flip my throttle body around 180 degrees so that the cable wouldn't be kinked

well i dont have a donor car so if im gonna need somenthing id like to have it before hand then have the truck sit wth a perfectly good engine while im on a wild goose chase for somenthing i coulda had before the swap...just wanna be prepared thanks for the info

I decided today as I wrangled my engine around and made it fit that a engine swap is more like a puzzle where most of the peices don't exactly fit, you gotta make them fit.

For what it is worth, I think my factory 2.8 throttle cable will work. It more than reaches my carb.

things that attatch your current truck to the new (non-factory) components like throttle cables, driveshafts, radiator hoses, exhaust, trans cooler lines, shifter holes, master/slave cylinder connections, fuel lines, engine wiring etc are not things that you can "plan ahead" for with much certainty.

so even if you get a throttle cable that you think will work flawlessly. it may not depending on your combination coupled with placement of parts (i.e. where the engine ends up sitting)

and even if your throttle cable your truck is still going to "sit with a perfectly good engine" while you solve any number of those other variables i listed

long story short: be prepared to do this. don't go into it expecting things to work according to plan, they will still work just not how you planned they would

mine reached but my carb (when i had a carb on my v8) was a couple inches further back than the stock one was so the cable was kinked and stiff. so i flipped the carb around so that my cable would have gradual bends and not stick, or break in the future due to kinks. flipping it then needed a longer cable

an engine swap is more like a puzzle

agreed 1 piece is added to a group of already hooked together pieces. so you have to do it as you go along. except in this case you are using pieces from different puzzles to make a different picture

ive had my truck since i was 16 so three years now i dont have anyone to help but ive wanted a v8 since i got it...i no theres gonna be problems and i no there will be stuff taht dont fit like i wanted it to thats why im askin ppl that have done the swap u guys no more about it than i do so all the info i can get ill take

Looking at pics comparing the two it looks pretty darn close between where my original carb is and where my new one is. I left the carb on it today, I will have to check in the morning.

well i dont no much about a carb,d engine mines injected and so was my explorer and ive never worked on anything with a carb so i guess in kinda illiterate when it comes down to them...ive read the stickys and what not just making sure im not missing anything thats not covered in there and exploring all the options i have befor jumping in to sumthing thats over my head

why would you replace a fuel injected 4.0L V6 with a carb'd 302? Unless you plan on making alot of mods to the carb'd V8, you are going to be roughly the same power wise, have a heavier vehicle, less throttle response, and use more fuel. now a stock fuel injected 5.0L is competitive with a tbi 350 small block ...... I would seriously consider fuel injection, specially in a 4x4...... or atleast a cam and a 4 barrel for your 302.
