Gt-12

Between steel and fiberglass, I vote fiberglass.

But, how about polyurethane or another similar polymer?

While all metal would be cool, I can definitely agree with making that part out of glass. Like you said easier to repair, with less chance of damage to other parts of the car should something happen. Being able to mold spares rather than starting from scratch doesn't hurt either. Heck with your buck you're probably half way done making a mold anyway.

To bad you can't do one of those urethane air dams that are replacing all the fiberglass units. Even less chance of damage, but it would be harder to repair if something happened.

Regardless with the skill you've shown so far once everything is painted I doubt that anyone will be able to tell where the metal ends and the glass begins.

So there's nothing that could simply hold up to it?

the only thing i can think of that would even come close would be to make the bottom of the airdam from 1/4'' steel and tie it into the frame like a skidplate....but it wouldn't be angled up like a skidplate,so if it did hit something it would dig in...causing even more issues.

this type of material is not moldable in the fashion that fiberglass is-it would be molded by heating and drawing over the mold.while this would be possible, the material is not readilly available and it's not as workable for body finishing as fiberglass

this is what i'm thinking...you won't be able to tell what it's made of by looking at it.and yes,the buck is a solid start on a mold plug.

I've probably missed it somewhere in the build thread, but what's the approximate HP-to-weight ratio on this beauty? Would that possibly affect your final choice as to either steel or 'glass?

it hasn't really been a consideration.

as i'm building a street rod and not a race car i'm more concerned with it looking cool and being driveable than getting the last drop of performance out of it.

and as it relates to the weight of the components, building the airdam out of metal or fiberglass should be about the same.

I was wondering about that, also.....if they're close to the same, then I'd go with the material that's easiest to repair, as you've mentioned.

With the ability to reproduce the air dam more easily if anything goes wrong I would definitely go for 'glass. Plus you can corner the aftermarket:D

that was my thought...the aftermarket's huge for modified gt6's:icon_rofl:
