Front Drive Train Noise

My '05 Ranger 4X4 has developed a "humming" noise from the front right ....sounds like "aggressive tread" tire noise almost (isn't).....gets increasingly loud from about 50 km/h and is quite loud at highway speed. A fairly sharp left turn makes it go away. Going into neutral or 4 wheel drive makes no change.
Any ideas? :bawling:

Most definitely a wheel bearing/hub assembly. The getting worse with speed and going away when turning is a dead give away.

Jack up the front end and grab the top/bottom of each tire and wiggle up down to check for play in them.
 
When was the last time it was serviced? I have a 99 Ranger that I have repacked the bearings at the times the service called for it.
'05 is not really old to have issues unless it has been really abused real hard or nobody ever repacked the bearings. I have never had to replace a wheel bearing on any of my cars and trucks.

Repacked the bearings...yes...but never replaced.

The poor little truck has 170,000 kms on it and has been 60,000 since the dealer did full service on it. Doesn't have manual hubs - my buddies claim it's kind of nightmarish to pull it apart but I haven't tried yet....hoping something horrific doesn't happen until the holidays are over.

Well, your buddies are wrong about the hubs part - it straight up does not have disconnecting hubs. The front driveshafts are always turning. The wheel bearing can be had as a separate part, or a hub assembly with new abs sensors. Not a bad job at all - but around $300 for the entire assembly.
