85 Ranger getting some teeth...

Good luck. Hope they fit for you. Got a major problem myself. Tried to turn engine by hand to put the four flexplate nuts on and will only turn about 20 degrees. Looks like I'm dropping the tranny and transfer case again. First automatic I've fooled with and must have done something wrong. Hate doing stuff twice!

I can hardly wait to get to that point.

Major compenents are not even going together yet and we are already having fitment issues. :yahoo:

Good luck on your project, hope it is something simple. :icon_cheers:

I just found that too and took it out, when I was done with my edit it refreshed and then I saw your post. :D

I dunno, the more I think about the more I am thinking about sending the headers back. I read what I wanted to read aways back and thought for some stupid reason that if it was a case fill it HAD a 157T bellhousing, when it was if it is a case fill I NEED a 157T bell. I didn't catch that until this morning when you replied I had a 164t bell.

By the time I track down a bellhousing from a select few cars from the 60's and 70's for $1-200, a new flexplate for $85, torque converter for $170 and the plate that goes between the engine for $20... don't know how good of a deal it is. That is about $500 of parts with freight to get $160 headers to work with a $200 transmission and I don't still don't know if the headers will fit with the stock transfer-case and if they don't its all for naught.

Tranny is already set up with a 164t bell, torque converter that is ready to go, if I wanted I have a shallower 164t bell, I have a like new 164t 50oz flexplate, 3 plates that go between the engine... Long story short, I could bolt everything I have together right now and drop in the truck (if it was ready) tomorrow. I dunno, I think it will roll it around until Monday. I got an ad on craigslist going so we will see if anything develops by then.

What is a good second option for a TTB 4x4 for exhaust?

It's all part of the "learning curve" :D There has been a couple guys who modified the Tri-Y's to work with the 164 tooth bell. But they were also 2wd though too. Might also want to look at the Hedman 88400's before choosing.

I thought about tweaking them, but right where they have issues it is still two tubes. Probably going to cut my losses and move on.

Your build is looking nice. I'll just throw this out there for a possible option. I'm running a set of James Duff headers on my 87 4x4. I have a 164T (5sp) bell housing and the headers fit really nicely. Not the cheapest headers, but they have worked great for me so far. I've attached a few links that have photos.

Thanks for the pics. :icon_thumby:

They need to make a 302 swap gallery to get everything that works with what in one place. :icon_idea:

Where'd you find the 164 tooth 5 speed bell ? What 5 speed are you running ?

Here's my C4, AA and BW1350. My problem is in the tranny somewhere. I'll take it to the shop and see what I messed up.

These are Patriot H8430 headers, they are the closest to find to a 88400 that I have found installed pictures of. Is that kind of fit normal or is it because of the mounting plates?

I would by far and away rather lose a couple horses with my manifolds that will clear everything than take a grinder to the frame, especially like that. And if I gotta cut the frame, I might as well use my '94 Mustang shortys that I alrady have...

88400 for referance, the pipe routing looks pretty dang close.

I found this on a link on TRS with the Patriot headers, I am not stepping out on you guys. :icon_thumby:

The 88400's tuck in closer to the heads than the Patriots do. I'm in the process of swapping a C-4 into my Ranger now, I'll take a couple pics of how the Tri-Y's fit this evening when I get home to show you.

Sorry if I made the illusion I'm using a T5 bell housing. That is not the case but I am running a 164T flywheel with a 5sp NV3550 trany. If you’re looking for a manual the nice thing about the NV3550 is……
1 - It’s small in size. Pretty easy to install without a lot of mods:icon_thumby:
2 - Under rated at 300ftlb of torque.:icon_thumby:
3 – For off road trucks it has a good low (but not to low) 1 gear:icon_thumby:
4 – Has a great over drive for the highway (70mph at about 2300 rpms).:icon_thumby:

The photos of the frame being cut.....wow that's a lot of metal being taken away. I don't think those headers would be worth all that cutting. Espically on a 4x4 truck. Of course just my opinion.:D

I have found pics of the tri-y's, they don't look too bad with the frame. But mine were all over my 164t seperater plate. That is obviously with no starter installed too. Initially I blew it off because of what I said earlier thinking case fill C4's were 157t.

I do think they have the right idea with the passenger side tri-y having only one pipe deep.

Rather than reinvent the wheel I would rather start off with something closer to working.

The Patriots do have slightly larger primary's (1-5/8" vs 1-1/2) and a larger collector (3" vs 2-1/2")... but that is still a ton of interferance. The pipe routing is the same, and they look to have about the same curvature coming off the head.

So the tri-y's do not work for an AOD tranny? I was thinking about getting some of these headers, but i have an AOD tranny. Sorry to jack your thread.

I've cut frames before and just boxed them for support, but that is a good bit to cut out on a frame that's not even boxed to start with.
