Been putting it off for wayyyyyyyyyy to long and before my front end starts literally falling apart I am dropping off my truck this am at 7.30 and was told it will be done by noon.

So yea i'm getting new upper and lower ball joints on the left and right and new inner and outer wheel bearings on the left and right and new outer tie rods on the left and right and then an alignment. Will have a 1 year warranty parts / labor. Will post the total money spent with tax later today.

That's gonna be a big bill, last time someone quoted me on a balljoint replacement it was something like $200 for a single balljoint. Hell to the no!

It's always good to take care of your vehicles. They can be a safety hazard if they aren't, and frankly...... it just feels better to have a vehicle you know is taken care of.

That seems about right.......a good quality ball joint, 1-1.5hr of labor, and an alignment afterwards.......seems fair.

My favorite thing is me diagnosing a problem (especially when it's electrical or drivability) and then the person says.....oh well I've got a son who's a mechanic, or me and my dad are going to do it...etc, etc.....and you just know it'll be done wrong, of half assed, or something. Granted, I understand with today's financial strains, but how do you think i feel when my income is based off jobs, and a $350 ticket turns into a $75 ticket? Kinda blows.......

Just dropped it off 30 minutes ago, who's gonna guess on final price of bill???

$1550.......i had ONE ball joint replaced at meineke months ago, $425 frickin dollars....with my discount i can get a ball joint from work with a lifetime warranty for less than $20. with all the tools they have, it couldnt have taken more than an hour to replace it....if you took yours to a local shop, it'll prob be a little cheaper, the chains will F you tho

I am fully capable of doing the work myself. I’ve been doing mechanics since my first mini-bike. This time though I let the shop put in the adjuster bushings after the alignment check. I figure that the local economy could use the influx of cash. Plus I tip the mechanic a few bucks for doing the work . Just under $200.00 for both sides. Quoted me 1 1/2 labor and that's how long it took. Balls and rods were A-OK, but as the old commercial says" you can pay me now or you can pay me later.".

they just called me and found a frozen u-joint, front right, 22 bucks for the joint, 20 bucks labor ( fair enough ) and good thing with winter right around the corner.

yeah, otherwise it woulda been double frozen :D

$1242.76?? This is an investment for your truck. You will not have to worry about loosing a wheel when you take a sharp curve!!!! I had all of mine done and it was close to $700 for 4 ball joints (Moog with zerk fittings) and new upper arms (the kind that I know can do by myself if I ever need to to them again. The tech showed me how to do them and I am glad I can now to them. He let me watch him try to press one of the ball joints out of my stock upper and it did not come out. Just got mashed a bit.

The tech showed me on my stock uppers the difference between them and I see that on my stock uppers you cannot press the ball joints out. I called the Ford dealer near us and they said the same thing. Some people on this site said they can press their ball joints out and others said you can't. I called around to 10 different shops in three different locations and 7 of the 10 shops told me you can't press them out of the stock uppers. I had a tech at one of the places show me a 2003 Ranger 2wd that the owner tried to press out the upper ball joints with a friend that worked at a Chevy dealership and they did not come out...just messed up the joints and the uppers.

The manual my tech showed me said it was recommended to have the uppers replaced to add new ball joints on some trucks. He said that I DO have the uppers that have the replaceable ball joints and I will not have to replace the uppers again if I need the upper ball joints.

Everything is either easy or a PAIN!!!!

AHHH yes I do wish I had a garage and a press and ALL the tools needed to do the work my self, it is definitely satisfying to see your own work that has been done.:icon_thumby:

here is a price break down thru auto zone assuming I would have done it myself.

4 ball joints $95.74

4 wheel bearings plus 2 seals $82.66

2 outer tie rods $43.52

1 u-joint $12.99

alignment $75.00

All parts prices were for the BETTER longer warranty parts.

man that is why its good to know people. i got quoted 200$ to do that. from a backyard mechanic that does alot of auto work from my coworkers and he got good reviews all around. Personally 200$ is still too much for me and im going to try and do it myself 1st. besides the alignment that needs to be done at a shop.
