What should a1989 Ranger, 2.3 engine, get for gas mileage

From your past experience, what would a 1989 Ranger that's a two wheel drive, with stock wheels and tires, and a 2.3 engine, which has a 5 speed tranny, get for gas mileage?

I've gotten 25 mpg with my '94 2.3 4x4.

Given that the '89 is slightly less aerodynamic, around 22 mph highway would be a good bet.

I've gotten as high as 31 once...last long trip I got 28.6


I haven't driven anything further than 10 minutes away in the past 2 months and I've been getting around 22-24. That's without worrying about conserving gas. When you're only buying a tank every 3 weeks anyway why bother?

Are all the years the 2.3's were made, basically the same style engines.

And, do all of the 2.3's get about the same gas mileage, depending on whether it's in a 2wd ranger with a manual, or automic tranmission?

Or, were some of the 2.3 years better than others for fuel mileage and performance?

your truck has barely the same mpg than mine and even the 2wd 2.3 of the same year.

why Ford why!!! u couldnt make a 2.5 4wd

I was getting 28 MPG average when I was commuting with my 90 2.3/5 speed/4x4/4.10s/31" tiers/6" lift and baja front fiberglass fenders. Drive was 50 miles each way, mountain pass in the middle. Truck does 65 without too much trouble, try to go faster than that takes an act of Congress and a full Blue Moon. So, don't try and force it, MPG drops.... Hope to have it back on the streets very soon...

just for comparison:
mine is fully tuned up, brakes properly adjusted, tires properly inflated, 3.45:1 axle ratio, 5spd trans, no power steering.

i get 25MPG on average with mixed driving.. i've gotten up to 30MPG if i really drive like a raisin

its an 89, i did it doing 50-55mph on mostly flat land .

all it takes is very light acceleration and driving a little bit slower than usual. usually driving in 5th gear will kill my mileage so running in 4th keeps engine vacuum higher

i got used to driving like this with my 69 F250...390 gas guzzler, i've gotten almost 20MPG with that one.. its a 2bbl though.


i forgot to mention that i've cleaned out the cooling system and made sure my coolant temp. sensor and thermostat was all working good.
