Difference in TK4 and TK5?

The M5OD R-1 will fit. You need the Trans, flywheel, clutch, clutch line, starter and inspection plate. You can pull the pilot bearing out of the crank because you won't need it. The 4.0 uses the pilot bearing in the flywheel. The crossmember will need to be moved to a new location, The holes won't be there so you will have to drill. The shifter will be in a slightly different location so you may have to modify the plate in the floor. The 4.0 uses a larger clutch so you will be upgrading there as well. The 4.0 starter is a permanent magnet style which uses less amperage to run so that is also an upgrade of sorts. The starter needs a small modification of wiring to work.
Oh, don't forget, You will also need the bellhousing bolts.

OK, you're about to waste a few bills.

The INPUT GEAR and CLUSTER GEAR are two different parts. Don't mix them up.

If your cluster is boogered up front, your input gear probably is as well. AND your case (odds are, you spun the front countershaft bearing and that's what broke it).

You NEED to explain what happened, or your repair will NOT work.

"Only" two or three teeth breaking off the transmission is a bit like saying "only" one wheel fell off your truck. It can cause MASSIVE carnage.

Especially, what is the fuzzy stuff? If the gear was ground up, what ground it (it's probably chewed up)? If it's the case, well, you can guess what you need.

This transmission does NOT sound rebuildable to me. You're ignoring very serious stuff! And making noise without making pits or scores is, well, just a bit unbelievable.

You Know, That is what i said was the problem in the first place the input gear, whch according to the part supplier is part of the input shaft itself. Bearing is not damaged in any way, so thats not whats broken.

The noise started when i was pulling a guy out of a pit and it was icy and i went sideways alittle bit and hit a patch of which shot me forward then the engine died. (engine is fine cause it looked over the entire thing). That is what happened. The broken off teeth just got stuck on the bottom of the transmission.

The Fuzzy stuff is not stuff it is the apperance of the gears. Not worn but like they should with oil on them which contributed to the fuzzy appearence. No Wear!

I am just doing it for fun cause I got a new trans and an engine with all the Duraspark and 4 barrel carburator. And for the last time there is no scoring or pits, I looked over everything with a magnafine glass.

Thanks! But a little more work and time that i have right now maybe a project for summer:rolleyes::icon_welder:. Plus I like the original starter because it hasn't worn out and is still starting the truck on the first crank.:D Also looked in the tech section but it only had the swap for the 2.9L?

Tk4

I had a TK5 or 5's in my 85 BII. I tore 3 of them up. Everyone had the first gear (input) broke off. It started when I put 31's tires and doing more offroad. I finally figured out what was going on. With the truck in 5th gear going down the highway put to much strain on the gears. 5th gears goes through the input gear (first) and goes through the cluster shaft back up to 5th gear. It would not handle the stain. My last trans I would always use 4th on the highway. I never used 5th. This way in 4th, it is a lock up straight through the transmission. No power is routed into the cluster shaft. Never had a problem since.

My son's ranger has a TK4 and he's running 33" Mud grips. He gives it Hell when offroad. The trans has had no problems since he has owned the truck (5 years). I would suggest if you could find a TK4, I would go for it. It is shorter in length so you would need the driveshaft from the other truck. The TK5 and TK4 is the same trans except the TK5 has the 5th gear section bolted to the end of it. Mazda modified the TK4 to a 5 speed.
