The walmart

Why six years for a double major? She change her mind part way through? Or is that also including her Masters before the Doctorate. And what kind of job having a PhD in Neuroscience only pays 40,000 a year (or is that the residency pay)? My wife makes more than that working as a paralegal.

A PHD in Neuroscience with out a chemistry back ground gets you about $40,000 a year, because basically all you can do with it is teach.

It has taken 6 years because of the required classes. I don't just mean Gen ED classes .... part of it is scheduling ...... one of the classes she needed was only offered every other year, and it was a prereq to something else, so to maintain her 30% scholarship she had to fill it with something else....

I do not fault anyone "working" at Walmart, a job's a job. But I refuse to shop there, not a thing there I can't get somewhere else for roughly the same price, sometimes less.
Personally I wish they would slowly fade away so the workers and product sells could be absorbed by local businesses again.

What they did as a company helping shutter small town businesses should have been a crime. Any small town that wants a Walmart is making a pact with the Devil.

How so? Please explain this and really think it through first since I am letting you know, I have discussed this very subject ad nauseum and am more prepared to shoot down the silly comments that are sure to come about mom and pop and benefits and all that.

You are so full of shit. They didn't work their asses off, they road the backs of the people who did.

So those poor workers got them the degrees? Got them the knowledge to understand ow the businesses are run?

Sounds like you are jealous or loathe the success of others.

I'm sorry, but I've met the people they step on, on their way up. I'm not doubting their are hard working, upper class individuals who have made their way up on there own by hard work and diligence. But in Walmart and alot of other major corporations, they are just as bad as middle-age surf's. It's alot like that in fact. They work in the guys field, to harvest it, make the money for him, he gives them a little bit, while they have just enough to live off of, while he chills in his mansion over looking the field. Without the poorer folk, he wouldn't have anyone to work it. Everyone has this dream of being that guy in the castle, but if everyones wanting to be the CEO or King, then nothings going to get down, nothings going to grow, and no one will be fed. I'm tired of people blaming it on middle and lower class people being bitter. We aren't, we are just tired of getting stepped on.

Those people that got stepped on could have grown a sack and clawed thier way up to. Problem is that's really hard work and generally people don't want to put in really hard work with no guarantee of a payday.

And anyone who thinks small town businesses are 90% all crooks has more issues than can be solved here.

I think you have issues. Its called blinds over your eyes. I know exactly what kind of person you are in this debate by that statement alone. I came from a small town, i have lived in many small towns and ive lived in big ones. Small town people and Small town business people are the worst kind. Generally speaking of course, because I have met some that proved otherwise, but are few and far between.

this country doesn't produce any more advanced degrees because of the cost........ have you seen what it costs to go to Grad school?

She got off cheap. I am almost 180k grand in and haven't finished yet.

that 120K figure is only what we borrowed plus interest, this does not include scholarships and what I have paid from my pocket.....

I am glad this is her last semester and the army (if she goes that route) will pay for medical school

"A PHD in Neuroscience with out a chemistry back ground gets you about $40,000 a year, because basically all you can do with it is teach."

I am going to ask a serious question here. I am not intending any offense, insult, etc....Why would you spend 220,000 getting a degree that will only pay you 40,000 a year when you could change your degree a little bit and make a half million a year after residency? (and no I don't really know what Doctors of Neurology are pulling in, half a million is a guess)

you are close, neurologist after residency employed in Sun city AZ pulls down about 500K a year. a Neurosurgeon pulls low 7 figures. she is one class away from being able to go to medical school .... she needs organic chemistry, although she passed the MCATS with out it, but it is required at every med school she has looked at.

I will be over 250k when I am done. I started for teaching, and realized the salaries are so low it isn't worth it. Since I have a hard focus on political science, I will be moving over to law school.

I have been ripped off more times in small towns than anywhere else....... we have a clothing store in town .... they sell the same Chinese crap you can get at walmart.

Then 220,000 is worth it isn't it? I kinda look at it this way (which may be a retarded way of looking at it) : $220,000 of DEBT for a job/career worth easily twice that versus, let's say, a bachelors with 40,000 of debt to get a job/career worth 40-50,000 a year. At 50,000 a year it will take much longer, and you will feel the budgeted payment longer, to repay that loan then 500,000 a year, where you could (theoretically, if there were no taxes, malpractice insurance, etc..) repay that loan in one year and still be living comfortably.

BUT we are way off point which was the education system in this country is in a slide and not turning out enough QUALIFIED high tech workers to keep us in the front of the rest of the world.

OH God. Another rat entering the streets! just joking. I married a rat. And teaching really isn't worth the paycheck. It's not worth the summers off either. GOOD CHOICE.

I will be, total with bachelor's, about 70,000 in debt with a job/career starting (federal govt - Park Service, etc) at about $60,000 and commonly paying 120,000. I'll take that. Beats having a business with employees.
