To the OP.

1 Do you enjoy working only 40 hours a week (average)?
2 How about 5 day work weeks?
3 Medical benefits?
4 want a pilot who hasn't had sufficient rest or been working 10 days in a row?

1. my schedule can range from 40-80 hours in one week.
2. 5-7 but usually 6
3 LOL hell I kinda wish
4 I'd surely rather not, but Ive gonna over a month without a day off in august-september 118 degree arizona heat. Inside a 150 degree plastic containment. I never passed out so I expect the pilot with the nice Air conditioned cab and sit down job not to either

Your article was excellent IMO though capt jay

its funny how all the people on the top don't fully respect what their workers do for them all they do is sit on top and get paid....then they get millions of dollars in bonuses...i don't think it should be legal.

Those people didn't get to the top magically..

They worked their asses off for years and are now reaping the benefits.

as far as wal mart goes how can anyone blame them for our economy? business is business and the reason for a business is to make as much money as possible. if they can buy essentially the same item for less from china then its gives them more profit. more profit eventually means more jobs. people may not like it but if something is cheaper people will buy it whether it comes from the usa or a third world country where children are running factories. it sucks but its the way it is

And that is why the government is supposed to try and protect American business through tariffs, etc.. instead of making it easier to outsource jobs. Then again, how much is a customer service rep really worth in this day and age?

I personally think a big problem is that this country is becoming more technically advanced and mechanized, but we don't have the education system in place to support it. Microsoft can't find qualified people here and are sucking them in from India, China and Mexico. Where are all the engineers, architects, doctors, etc...there is a short short supply of all of them. This country is no longer a manufacturing, manual labor based economy and it is not coming back. If you want to make a comfortable living, you had better get educated or figure out a way to make it yourself and be prepared to have employees rip you apart because all you do is sit at the top and get paid.

Wal Mart is filling the niche of affordable shit. That is all people can afford and will be able to afford as their wages continue to decline. Big problem is going to be when Wal Mart can't lower prices anymore and people can't even afford the cheap shit. It will happen eventually.

then we will have to shop at Dollar General........

At what cost?

You really need to see that documentary to see on who's backs WM is doing their "business".

I submit, that anyone who likes WM must see "The High Cost of Low Prices" before ever saying another good thing about WM again. It should be required. Yeah, business is business, but predatory business is predtory business (on the backs of people making squat for money, and have no option. Hear it from their comments in the documentary). WM is discusting.

As far as union dislikers go (and I have no issue with them), please remember, there are many unions out there. And each of them have different policies and operating principles. My union (Ironworkers), in the Cal/Neva/AZ District Counsel is actaully sovent and quite fair in their practices. Dues are non-excessive, and strong-arming is not a function of any of the management. Funky things still happen, but we're doing pretty well. I do know, as evidenced in comments here, that some unions only seem to be in business to help themselves. They hurt everybody. It's a shame they give all unions a bad name. :(

Don't mean to be preachy...but y'all really need to see that documentary before commenting with any personal validity to your comments. "Cheap prices" do not make it alright, and is not an excuse. Especially when each of the 3 remaining members of the Walton family (on their own) are listed in the top 500 richest people in the world....when their employees; family-supprting families can't get basic health insurance, and where a company has a 95% lay-off rate at or before about 5 1/2 months (because at 6 months most states require health insurance to be available), and the ones who do hang on to their jobs, have to pay for 1/2 of it themselves....and for crappy coverage. All while the Walton family gets richer and richer. And this doesn't include the unbeleivable conditions WM employees live under in China (yes, they work directly for WM! <see the documentary>):annoyed:

Don't post again until you've seen it. THEN you can talk from an educated platform....:icon_thumby: :D

yeah i totally agree but they are way overpayed. I don't think their job is really worth all of that money, i mean come on the president only makes 200K.

I don't know about any of the other self employed people here, but the clients that made my business were wealthy doctors, ceo's and the like. Not the school teachers, state workers, etc... I am kinda glad SOMEONE is making enough to pay me. And after knowing these people and seeing them work themselves into 60 year old heart attacks, I wouldn't trade their paycheck for mine.
My brother in law makes a lot of money. Easily more than the president. He worked his ass off through college and double majored in physics and computer science. Went to grad school and got a masters in Computer science, specializing in Fuzzy Logic. He is a world renowned expert in his field and makes a small fortune and is worth every penny. THE POINT BEING these guys don't make a lot of money for doing nothing. They worked hard, THEY'RE SMART, they provide a usefulness and I guarantee you the vast majority of them are workaholics. I have no problem with them making 5, 10, 15 million a year. If you want to control public servant/employee compensation than fine. Leave private businesses alone. (and don't bail them out)

When you have three masters degree's and an IQ of 170 and still want to tell them how much they can make, then I will listen.

I'm sorry if this has already been mentioned (because I don't have time right now to read all the posts), but:

#1 - Walmart is a heinous, despicable entity that is partly responsible for the economy's current condition. Want some really scary insight? Watch the documentary "The High Cost of Low Prices" some time. That'll cause you to lose your taste for WM (if you have a conscience that is)

#2 - Unions. I've been a union member for 24 years now. I think I read a post where a lad was happy making $70 after taxes??? You're obviously not supporting a family (and if you ARE, you have my deepest sympathies and admiration!). I make $1400/wk ($1000 after taxes). I have a pension. I have medical coverage. I get my weekends off. I get "normal" working hours. I can get laid off any time, but I also have protection from unscrupulous bosses/companies who would take advantage of a sagging economy by threatening my job if I didn't do ANYthing they wanted me to do. California is an expensive place to live (SF Bay Area), but where is it not?

I totally agree though, that Unions have been headed by individuals who are less than genuine, and it serves to add momentum to others' who want THEIR piece of the pie as well (we call it "greed"). I'm no lover of unions, but it has served to educate me as to just how bad things would be for us workers if they did not exist. Could things use revamping? Sure! But there are other issues in society that contribute to the moral decay, that are much more systemic in nature, and would have to be fixed first before any "symptoms" could be dealt with successfully. The UAW is just *1* union that is not "getting real". There HAVE to be concessions, on all sides, for things to moderate. Standing one's ground in such a staunch way is counter productive.

So, if you like your weekends, your 40-hour work week, and most of the labor protection laws on the books in ALL states (union and non-union) thank a union. They were the ones that fought for them, with or without yours and my help.:icon_thumby:
One. That "documentary is propaganda. Nothing more. How dare you lie to the members here and call that a documentary.

Second. You are a union member and that's great. Just remember that your high labor costs can and likely WILL drive your job out of the country or force your company to fold eventually. That train is never late. You are a brainwashed fool if you think unions are good for the country and economy.

yeah i totally agree but they are way overpayed. I don't think their job is really worth all of that money, i mean come on the president only makes 200K.

Plus millions in extras. Don't be so naive.

this country has grown far too lazy to earn those jobs you mentioned. That's why Microsoft can't fill them. Plus, why pay some asshole 80k a year to do a job almost as good as a guy across the pond will do it for 40k?
