:icon_confused: got a 88 ranger 2.3efi with 5speed man and the other day it wouldnt start when it was 0degrees out got home from work and checked things out...

turn key on didnt hear the fuel pump kick on like normal so i jumped the relay pump works replaced relay still nothing when i turn on key also when i turn it over no spark...called a few ppl and 1 guy who had this prob his was the eec computer could this be it on mine as well or is there any thing else i should check?:icon_confused: :temper: :dntknw:

KIS. That stands for Keep It Simple. So lets try and do that first. Did you check/change the battery? Did you check OBD-I codes?. There is a whole list of trouble codes on this forum. Other members I'm sure are way more familar with that model.

new battery so i ruled that out as for the obd codes the computer says "vehicle not responding":icon_confused: and there isnt a odb hookup just the one on passanger side for the eec test using the ford interface cable

its KISS, keep it simple stupid..........lets see you have an 88 so that means you have a Cap, rotor, wires, coil, ignition module. .. I would concentrate on those things first because you said you had no spark. my guess is the ignition module lets see what the other Peeps think.

The PCM relay has to operate in order to route power to energize the Fuel Pump relay.

It should be the relay right next to it.

replaced the only relays i could find ones next to breather box 1 for eec and fuel

Suspect the ignition switch isn't supplying PCM relay power then.

You should be able to probe the PCM relay sockets with a meter. If you don't get a switched power (key on = power present, key off = power absent), then you either have no ground for the relay or a bad ignition switch. Jiggle the ignition switch, see if you can ever get that power to pull in the relay.

If you look at the relay, you'll see numbers on the contacts. http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/relays.html

You may have a PCM power diode in the fusebox. Make sure it is secure. I don't know if an 88 has that or not, but if it does, it needs to be part of the circuit to pull in the PCM relay, IIRC. I know the newer models have that diode.

You may try simply putting a jumper in the PCM realy sockets in place of relay for troubleshooting. It would go in the 87 and 30 sockets, with the relay removed, of course.

pcm relay where would that be cuz im only finding 2 next to the breather

One of those two.

One is FP, the other is PCM, EEC, whatever they called it in 88. Same thing.

I goofed when I read the original post I thought the fuel pump was working. Forget my ignition module idea. :)

ok well tested the wires for the eec and only got power to 1 wire fuel pump runs it i go arounf the new relay but dont if i do it thru nthe eec test thing and still dont get anything via comp or anilog test argh

If you only have ONE power supplied to the EEC relay, that one is supposed to be there at all times. You are missing the power supplied by turning on the key (to Run). You DID have the key turned on during your probing, right?

If so, you may have a bad ignition switch, wiggle it while you listen for the FP to run.

did it on and off and wiggle the key and nuthing but if the key was bad wouldnt the engine not turn over?

(yup just power to that 1 pin wether its on or off)

I don't have an 88 schematic, but I know you should get coil voltage at the 85 relay terminal's socket with the key on.

All this relay discussion and we never mentioned checking the FUSE. Do that.

Also, you can DRIVE it with that EEC relay jumpered, until you get it figured out. Remove the jumper when you park. Ghetto, but effective. Heck, you could jumper it with a switch in the jumper to simplify that situation. Refer to the relay link posted earlier. Jumper 87 to 30.

FUSE was the first thing i checked also replaced all of them out of being curios so what else and its new relays so y should i have to jump them

guess i should have kept the 83 carbed ranger i had...
