Project: Moose Knuckle; Part III

your build thread makes my head hurt... I came and checked it out after looking at your totm. You jump all over te place... pick something and roll with it already!

Ha! I agree. I gotta figure out what the hell I'm doing.

Too many options!

This is more of a conversation piece rather then a build thread.

Well I'll take pictures when I decide what I'm gonnna do.

Come on. It shows my WB shortening and gas tank and bed. Jeeze!!!!

not good enough man!

Even though those pictures did make me feel very comfortable with the upcoming chop/downtime for my ranger... I'm looking forward to having a shorter wheelbase.

I know you'll do what you want, as you should, but I thought I'd give my .02.

My buddy always says instead of worrying about 4 tires, he's gotta worry about 12 (tow rig, trailer, and trail rig). There's the additional insurance and operating costs, storage, etc.
I'd stick with a 4.0. It makes plenty of power and doesn't require all the mods necessary for the sbf swap. You can use your ranger trans and t-case to keep costs (and weight) down as well. You said yourself there's no mud in CO, other than that, what would require more power than what the 4.0 offers?

I think guys read all the high dollar builds on Pirate (I know I do) and have been brainwashed into thinking that's the only way wheeling's possible. I dunno, like I said, you should do what you want, but I don't think I could (want to) afford to live that lifestyle. Having to keep both rigs and trailer in check (both mechanically and financially) becomes a full time job. Kinda takes the fun outta wheeling.

Good luck on whatever route you decide to take. I'll be watching the build.

I've got a few beefs with this post.I just wanna point out the trailer isn't his, storage isn't a problem, nor are tires for the trailer.

As for the maintenance part,My dad has a f-350 he put 40 something thousand miles on in one year of just hauling 20 thousand pound loads and the only thing that was ever done to it was tires and oil changes. That truck still hauls today but he want's something with more creature comfort so he bought a chevy(smart man the duramax is better.)

Chris,

I wasn't in any means trying to be an asshole. My humor is horrible across the net.
With that said, I might as well go big the first time.

Any picture doccumentation of the ease of this swap? And I'd rather fab my own mounts then buy some over priced shizz.

Oatmealman nailed it (as he knows me all too well) that I enjoy not having to worry about making it home on 50 miles of highway after a long day of abuse.

I've considered a 5.0 if I were to stroke it to a 347.
Hard thing is I have to decide if I want to keep it with in the relm of legality.

The Ranger is still on hold, but not for much longer.

I picked up a 72 F250 Explorer today. 390 2v and a C6. Stole her for 1200. Well, 1194 to be exact. I owe oatmealman 2 dollars still.

She's gettin a little body work, a few motor upgrades, and maybe a 14bolt rear a budy of mine has layin around. Not bad condition for a 38 year old truck.

I like her. Except the lack of radio. But the sound of wind and a big block are music to my ears.

i hate you:icon_rofl:

With no time spent wrenching, news is good news!

Next Sunday I'm road trippin out to Elizabeth to pick up a 351w and C6 for 125 bucks.

Motor currently doesn't run but is not seized and still turns over with ease. Came from an 88 with fuel injection. I havn't decided if I want to deal with fuel injection or do the carb conversion. I know it's a step backwards but it's simple, easy, and easy to troubleshoot.

Edelbrock makes single and dual plane square bore carb inntake manifolds for the 351w. Already got a distributer. I can run an in-line electric fuel pump and just run hose to the bottom of the tank from the fuel sending unit. TV cable and bracket.

I'm sure there's a lot more, but that's the guist.

Also plannin on strokin it to a 408 or 427. Just a difference in the bore.

I ordered a universal engine cradle. It's meant for retrofitting SBF's into older what evers. Cradle length can be cut down to accept 37 to 24" frames, tube gets welded to a flange, and gets bolted to the chassis.

Comes with motor mounts and everything for 140 from JCwhitney. 140 bucks but what ever.

Time to start ripping out the 3.0.

Propane?

I'm gonna take that route when I do my v8 swap... just for simplicities sake.

Possibly but the conversion kits are pricey or so I've heard. It might be worth a shot doing some research. But propane is more expensive than gas and has a power loss

The "got propane" kit costs a grand... so yeah hella pricy. However, you can rig it up using hyster parts on your own for about 300 bucks.

More expensive? :icon_confused: It's like a 1.75 a gallon here.

Alot of people claim the lower power and mileage, but there are others who claim that it doesn't matter... I'm with them.

If you don't have the correct compression and your timing isn't set correctly, yes it will suck (as in, not modifying the motor for propane properly, just tossing the kit on a stock engine) you gotta run really high compression with propane. I'm thinking... 11:1 for some reason to be ideal.

Set correctly it should do just fine.

General all purpose, easy to maintain, fun to play with rig.

Pane here has gotten pretty expensive.

I'm willing to give the truck avenger a shot.
