D28 question

hi there ive got to replace the passenger side axle in my d28. ive heard that you have to open the diff and pull the c-clip out but was wondering where the boot is on the axle couldnt i just pull the outside piece out? and leave the real short part of the axle still inside the diff?

if you only have to replace the outer axle shaft, then yes you can pull it apart at that boot and leave the inner shaft inplace. The boot hides the slip for the two shafts, just be prepared if you live in the salt belt for a wonderful fight seperating them

Just a side note. When you go to install the axle again, make sure the u-joints are clocked properly. Or it will bind.

if you need to replace the middle joint, then you need to pull the diff off and pull out the c-clip...if it's just an outer joint or stub shaft, then pull'er apart at the slip yoke...

not true, i've done them with a ball joint press leaving it assm. (the outer shaft still had to come out, but left the inner in place)

Yeah, I've heard of that being done before. That's the way I would do it too, considering breakage of the inner shaft and u-joint is pretty rare compared to the other two axle joints.

really? cool....when I had to change mine I just figured it would be easier to pull the diff out...

its still good to pull the diff to change the fluid and inspect everything regardless

definitely, its not a huge job either. then you can do the u-joint in a hydraulic press or a vice too. if youre going that far, do it right
