FX4 Level2? Yes, it's got thicker axle shafts larger outer bearings
and larger diameter axle tubes.

The FX4 LV II is the same strengthwise as an Explorer or F-150 8.8. Same carrier, same bearings and same diameter axleshafts. Width's, lugbolt patterns and brakes vary between applications though.

It is stronger than the regular run of the mill Ranger 8.8 though, for the reasons AllanD mentioned.

Yup...everything said is correct.

Though I will say....

'02 Fx4 Off Road = '03+ Fx4 Level II. Both have the 31spline 'beefier than regular ranger' axle. It's basically an F150/Bronco axle that's been narrowed. Steer clear of the early '02 model axles though....the limited slip in them like to blow up. Also, if the donor truck is a Fx4 Off Road and is NOT a Level II or is 2003 or newer, it DOES NOT have the better rear end in it. It merely has the same one found in any other ranger.

you if go to a bigger pick and pull yard you could probably get an explorer axle with disc brakes and l/s for around 100 bucks. but trying to find a level II axle will be pretty hard and will probably cost you 400+ and still be stick with shitty drum brakes.

I got mine for $150(38,000 mile unit) and also got a second one for $100(98,000 mile unit). They're scarce and hard to come by. Most yards would want anywhere between $350-600 for one.

That is a very good deal if it comes with a wrecked truck that hasn't been stripped... otherwise just get a Explorer axle and buy a Torson or Tru-Track and put in it if you prefer that kind of traction aid.

I got mine out of a '96 Explorer for $100 and I had to pull it, I rebuilt the factory clutch type L/S so I think I am good to go with the way it sits. If I don't like it, a lock right will slip right in there.

Ouch! For that price you could get yourself a good 9" or explorer 8.8 with a few add ons!

Don't forget that if something should ever go wrong with that rare FX4 axle that finding replacement axle shafts can become a nightmare, since so few were made and there really isn't a demand for them.

What year Explorer's / Navajo's have the heavier axles.

I can get an 8.8 from a '94 Navajo, drum brakes but is it the HD w/31 spline axles and L/S ?

91-01 Explorer's and Navajo's have 31 spline 8.8's for a rear axle.

95+ have disc brakes.
